SUMMARY:The End of Religious Freedom? Challenges from the Right\, the Left\, and Around the Globe
DESCRIPTION:Religious liberty is in peril around the globe. The U.S. in particular and the West in general must continue to press the case for this freedom. Rather than make us complacent about our own good fortune\, the frightening international scene must make us vigilant to defend what we have. Unfortunately\, the principle of religious freedom–and in some ways the entire notion of human rights–is under unprecedented assault even in the West. Forces on the right challenge the (classical) liberal project altogether\, and forces on the left water it down to incoherence. Therefore\, we must discover\, or rediscover\, a firm foundation for religious freedom so that we can rescue it at home and promote it in the world. He teaches political theory\, philosophy of law\, American political thought\, and politics and religion. At Villanova\, he is a faculty associate of the Matthew J. Ryan Center for the Study of Free Institutions and the Public Good\, and he holds the rank of battalion professor in Villanova’s Navy Reserve Officers’ Training Corps unit. He is also on the steering committee for the Villanova Political Theology Project and on the graduate committee of the Department of Political Science. He has served as the faculty adviser to the mock trial team and to the men’s club lacrosse team and as a mentor in the university’s Faith and Learning Scholars Program. \nFor the 2017-18 academic year\, Dr. Mark is on leave from Villanova University as a visiting fellow in the Department of Political Science at the University of Notre Dame under the sponsorship of the Tocqueville Program for Inquiry Into Religion and Public Life as well as the Notre Dame Institute for Advanced Study; the Program on Church\, State\, and Society; and the Center for Ethics and Culture. In the 2015-16 academic year\, he was on sabbatical as a visiting fellow in the Department of Politics at Princeton University under the sponsorship of the department’s James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions. \nDr. Mark is a fellow of the Witherspoon Institute in Princeton\, NJ\, and works with the Tikvah Fund in New York. He is an affiliated scholar of the James Wilson Institute on Natural Rights and the American Founding in Washington\, DC\, and he has taught at the Straus Center for Torah and Western Thought at Yeshiva University. Dr. Mark is also a member of the advisory council of CanaVox. He has served as an assistant editor of the journal Interpretation and is a contributor to the Arc of the Universe blog. \nDr. Mark speaks frequently for a wide variety of groups\, including the Acton Institute\, the US Military Academy (West Point)\, the American Enterprise Institute\, the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty\, the Love and Fidelity Network\, the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention\, Opus Dei\, the Agora Institute\, and Chabad. In September\, 2015\, Daniel spoke at the World Meeting of Families\, a triennial event organized by the Catholic Church\, which drew 20\,000 participants to Philadelphia. Other appearances have included speeches at Ave Maria University\, Arizona State University\, Baylor University\, Brigham Young University\, Colorado Christian University\, Eastern University\, the University of Notre Dame\, and the Mount Academy\, the Bruderhof (Anabaptist) high school in upstate New York. \nIn addition to his academic writing\, Dr. Mark has published on topics related to international religious freedom in US News & World Report\, Investor’s Business Daily\, Foreign Affairs\, The Hill\, and the Philadelphia Inquirer\, and he has appeared on CNN\, Al Jazeera America\, CBS radio in Philadelphia\, KNUS radio in Denver\, and Relevant Radio\, among other outlets. \nHe holds a BA (magna cum laude)\, MA\, and PhD from the Department of Politics at Princeton University. He wrote his dissertation under the direction of Professor Robert P. George on the subject of “Authority and Legal Obligation.” There\, he participated in the Program in Law and Public Affairs and the Penn-Princeton Bioethics Forum. DESCRIPTION:According to Gallup\, race relations are far lower today than they were in the early 2000s. In fact\, race relations hit an all-time low in 2015. DESCRIPTION:When Colorado cake artist Jack Phillips opened his cakeshop 24 years ago\, he wanted to do more than just provide for his family and his employees. He wanted to serve his community\, share his artistic talents\, and honor God through his work every day. \nHe even named his business Masterpiece Cakeshop. The name was inspired at least in part by his favorite Bible verse\, Ephesians 2:10\, which says\, “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus\, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago.” \nAs Jack says\, “We don’t want God to be part of our lives on just Sundays. We want Him to be part of our lives every day.” \nThat’s why Jack was shocked when not just his business\, but his faith became the subject of vicious attacks and threats of government punishment when his conscience would not allow him to design a custom cake for a same-sex wedding. \nThe government should not force anyone to create art that conflicts with their conscience. Yet that is exactly what the government did to Jack. And if the government has the power to tell you what to believe on the subject of marriage\, it has that same power over all issues. \nThat’s un-American. Sabet\, PhD\, is an author\, consultant\, former advisor to three U.S. presidential administrations\, assistant professor\, and serves as the President and CEO of SAM\, which he founded with former Congressman Patrick Kennedy in 2013. He has studied\, researched\, written about\, and implemented drug policy for almost 20 years. He has worked in the Clinton (2000)\, Bush (2002-2003) Administrations\, and in 2011 he stepped down after serving more than two years as the senior advisor to President Obama’s drug control director\, having been the only drug policy staffer to have ever served as a political appointee in a Democrat and Republican administration. He has appeared since at the Aspen Ideas and New Yorker festivals\, on the Organization of American States blue ribbon commission advising hemispheric drug policy\, and in hundreds of forums and discussions promoting the ideas outlined in his first book\, Reefer Sanity: Seven Great Myths About Marijuana\, published by Beaufort. He has been featured on the front page of the New York Times and in virtually every major media publication and news channel on the subject of drug policy. \nDavid W. Murray\, PhD\nSenior Fellow\, Hudson Institute \nDavid W. Murray is a Senior Fellow at Hudson Institute where he co-directs the Center for Substance Abuse Policy Research. While serving previous posts as Chief Scientist and Associate Deputy Director (Supply Reduction) in the federal government’s Office of National Drug Control Policy\, Murray directed extensive scientific research on all aspects of the drug problem and helped coordinate high-level inter-agency efforts to limit the production of illicit drugs and counter the transnational criminal organizations that control their global shipment and marketing. \nBefore entering government\, Murray was executive director of the Statistical Assessment Service and held academic appointments at Connecticut College and Brown\, Brandeis\, and Georgetown Universities. He is the author of numerous scholarly papers\, essays\, and commentaries; co-author (with Joel Schwartz and S. Robert Lichter) of the widely-noted book It Ain’t Necessarily So: How Media Make and Unmake the Scientific Picture of Reality; and a frequent guest on major network television and radio programs. \nMurray holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in social anthropology from the University of Chicago.

DESCRIPTION:Randall Schriver meets with Ma Ying-jeou\, former President of the Republic of China. \nJoin us for a public briefing about the U.S.-China relationship and the unfolding strategic competition with the former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs. \nThe United States and the People’s Republic of China (PRC) may have arrived at an inflection point in the bilateral relationship. While some analysts continue to believe a cooperative relationship is possible\, and that the U.S. and the PRC can form a G-2 type partnership to tackle a range of global challenges\, an increasing number of analyst see a very different trajectory. China’s assertive behavior and confrontational rhetoric suggest we are the leading edge in what will be a long and intense strategic competition for dominance over the Pacific Rim. While American strategists Andrew Marshall\, Robert Kaplan\, and Aaron Friedberg each began foretelling of this great power struggle over a decade ago\, recent events seem to underscore this view. In February 2016\, the U.S. Secretary of Defense\, Ashton Carter\, announced that great power competition has reemerged as the Pentagon’s top priority\, and he expects it will define the next 25 years. Later in the month\, the Commander of the U.S. Pacific Command\, Admiral Harry Harris\, told the Senate Armed Services Committee that China seeks hegemony in East Asia. \nAre the U.S. and China destined for strategic competition? Can the relationship be managed to ensure the competition is benign\, doesn’t result in military conflict\, and allows for cooperation to exist where our interests align? Can robust trade and economic ties be sustained in an environment of growing rivalry? What are the key policy choices U.S. decision makers must make to shape the relationship toward its optimal state? Wise and prudent stewardship of a variety of challenges simultaneously will be required for there to be sustained peace and stability. DESCRIPTION:The Centennial Institute is hosting a physician-assisted suicide policy discussion with Carrie Earll\, Carrie Ann Lucas\, and Michael Norton. \nThis legislative session again explored allowing doctor-assisted suicide to be legal in Colorado. Fortunately\, both Democrats and Republicans prevented this from happening. Unfortunately\, the issue continues to arise across the country with more and more states including California making this legal. Join us for an important policy discussion to understand why if such a measure became law\, it would invert the doctor’s time-honored role from the sacred duty of sustaining life to the ghoulish power of terminating it. \nLeading the discussion will be Carrie Earll\, Vice President of Government and Public Policy at Focus on the Family\, Carrie Ann Lucas\, J.D.\, CWLS\, Founder and Executive Director of Disabled Parents Rights\, and Michael J.
