SUMMARY:The End of Religious Freedom? Challenges from the Right\, the Left\, and Around the Globe
DESCRIPTION:Religious liberty is in peril around the globe. The U.S. in particular and the West in general must continue to press the case for this freedom. Rather than make us complacent about our own good fortune\, the frightening international scene must make us vigilant to defend what we have. Unfortunately\, the principle of religious freedom–and in some ways the entire notion of human rights–is under unprecedented assault even in the West. Forces on the right challenge the (classical) liberal project altogether\, and forces on the left water it down to incoherence. Therefore\, we must discover\, or rediscover\, a firm foundation for religious freedom so that we can rescue it at home and promote it in the world. In part\, this entails developing Christian ideas and a Christian culture that stand between secularism and theocracy. \nPlease join us to hear from Dr. Daniel Mark\, Chairman of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom for an update on the state of religious freedom in America and around the world\, as well as ideas on how we can protect this important human right.\n\nMonday\, January 29\, 2018\n7:00pm – 8:30pm\nColorado Christian University\nLeprino Hall 170\n8787 W. Alameda Ave. Lakewood CO 80226 \nOnline Form – CI – DLC – January 29 – Mark \nHTML Form Generator\n \nAbout Dr. Daniel Mark\, Chairman of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom \nDaniel Mark is an assistant professor of political science at Villanova University\, where he has taught since 2013. He wrote his dissertation under the direction of Professor Robert P. George on the subject of “Authority and Legal Obligation.” There\, he participated in the Program in Law and Public Affairs and the Penn-Princeton Bioethics Forum. He was also affiliated with the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions and served as coordinator of its Undergraduate Fellows Forum. \nBefore graduate school\, Dr. Mark spent four years as a high school teacher in New York City\, and he received the New Jersey Department of Education Commissioner’s Distinguished Teacher Candidate Award while earning his teaching certification. \nDr. Mark was appointed to the Commission on May 9\, 2014 by then-Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH) and reappointed on May 16\, 2016 by Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-WI) for a two-year term expiring in May 2018.

SUMMARY:Race Relations in America
DESCRIPTION:According to Gallup\, race relations are far lower today than they were in the early 2000s. In fact\, race relations hit an all-time low in 2015. How do we understand what is happening to race relations in America? How do we navigate these complexities and remain united as Americans? How does the public square engage with the messages from groups like Black Lives Matter and the Alt-Right? \nDr. Carol Swain\, author of the books: The New White Nationalism in America\, Race Versus Class\, and Black Faces\, Black Interests\, will help explore these important issues. \nA black conservative\, Dr. Swain has been unfairly smeared by the liberal Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) as an “apologist for white supremacists.” \nFrom high school dropout and teenage mother to highly accomplished university professor and public intellectual\, Dr. Carol M. Swain is passionate about empowering others to confidently raise their voices in the public square. Dr. Swain’s education and experiences make her a credible and powerful force for change in today’s social and political climate where conservatives are intimidated to champion an often-unpopular message. \nMonday\, December 4\, 2017\n7:00pm – 8:30pm\nColorado Christian University\nLeprino Hall 170\n180 S. Garrison St.\nLakewood\, CO 80226 \nOnline Form – CI – DLC – December 4 – Swain \nWeb Form Builder\n \nAbout Carol Swain: \nDr. Carol M. She is an author\, public speaker\, and political commentator. \nDr. Swain is the author or editor of eight books. Her first book\, Black Faces\, Black Interests: The Representation of African Americans in Congress (Harvard University Press\, 1993\, 1995)\, won the Woodrow Wilson prize for the best book published in the U. SUMMARY:Religious Freedom Rally for Jack Phillips
DESCRIPTION:When Colorado cake artist Jack Phillips opened his cakeshop 24 years ago\, he wanted to do more than just provide for his family and his employees. He wanted to serve his community\, share his artistic talents\, and honor God through his work every day. \nHe even named his business Masterpiece Cakeshop. The name was inspired at least in part by his favorite Bible verse\, Ephesians 2:10\, which says\, “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus\, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago.” \nAs Jack says\, “We don’t want God to be part of our lives on just Sundays. We want Him to be part of our lives every day.” \nThat’s why Jack was shocked when not just his business\, but his faith became the subject of vicious attacks and threats of government punishment when his conscience would not allow him to design a custom cake for a same-sex wedding. \nThe government should not force anyone to create art that conflicts with their conscience. Yet that is exactly what the government did to Jack. And if the government has the power to tell you what to believe on the subject of marriage\, it has that same power over all issues. \nThat’s un-American. And terrifying. \nJack’s case will be argued before the U.S. Supreme Court in early December. Join Jack Phillips\, Colorado Christian University\, Alliance Defending Freedom\, and faith leaders from around Colorado for a rally in support of religious freedom on November 8\, 2017 at 10:00am at the Colorado Christian University Event Center. \nLet’s send a message to Washington\, D.C. that religious freedom needs to be protected! \nReligious Freedom Rally for Jack Phillips\nWednesday\, November 8\, 2017\n10:00am-12:00pm MT\nColorado Christian University\nEvent Center\n8787 W. DESCRIPTION:North Korea’s Kim Jong Un has resisted threats from U.S. presidents and is unconvinced the United States is willing to stop him. SUMMARY:The Closing of the Liberal Mind: How Groupthink and Intolerance Define the Left
DESCRIPTION:Colorado Christian University is hosting Dr. Kim Holmes on campus for the September President’s Lecture Series. Dr. Holmes will speak on his recent book\, The Closing of the Liberal Mind: How Groupthink and Intolerance Define the Left. \nIn his book\, Holmes surveys the state of liberalism in America today and finds that it is becoming its opposite — abandoning the precepts of open-mindedness and respect for individual rights\, liberties\, and the rule of law upon which the country was founded\, and becoming instead an intolerant\, rigidly dogmatic ideology that abhors dissent and stifles free speech. \nThis event is open to the public and is in partnership with the Centennial Institute’s Distinguished Lecture Series. \n&amp;lt;a href=”https://www.formstack.com/forms/?2805574-Ls5mHs3gx1″ title=”Online Form”&amp;gt;Online Form – CI – DLC – September 17 – Holmes&amp;lt;/a&amp;gt; \nHTML Form Generator\n \nAbout Dr. Kim Holmes: \nDr. Holmes is an author and American Diplomat. Holmes is a former U.S. assistant secretary of state and former vice president for research at The Heritage Foundation. Recognized around the globe as one of Washington’s foremost foreign and defense policy experts\, Holmes is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations\, where he formerly served on the Washington Advisory Committee. As a historian of U.S. political movements and ideology\, Holmes writes about America’s place in the world and the changing political landscape. \nHis latest book\, The Closing of the Liberal Mind (Encounter\, April 2016)\, reveals how liberals in America are turning their backs on their traditions and have become a force for “illiberalism”— namely\, denying their fellow Americans’ rights and freedoms. \nOther published works include Rebound: Getting America Back to Great (2013) and Liberty’s Best Hope: American Leadership for the 21st Century (2008). He has an M.A. and a Ph.D. in history from Georgetown University with a focus on European and American history. He is a founding editor of the annual Heritage/Wall Street Journal Index of Economic Freedom.

SUMMARY:Debate on religious liberty in the public square
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an important debate on religious liberty in the public square. What does it mean to balance the separation of church and state? How does religious freedom interact with public accommodation laws? These issues are becoming more prevalent as people of faith encounter more aggressive government overreach. Consider the recent Hobby Lobby and Little Sisters of the Poor cases\, Christian bakers fined for refusing to participate in gay wedding ceremonies\, Christian colleges targeted because of their lifestyle expectations. The list goes on and on. \nThis debate will feature Dr. Alex McFarland of American Family Radio with Theresa Lynn Sidebotham\, Esq.\, founder of Telios Law PLLC\, against Michael L. “Mikey” Weinstein\, founder and president of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) with Scott Moss\, Esq.\, who teaches and conducts research at the University of Colorado Law School. \nThe event is sponsored by the Colorado Fireline Coalition and will be moderated by Dan Caplis\, morning radio host for KNUS 710 News/Talk. \nTuesday\, April 11\, 2017\n7:00 pm – 9:00 pm\nColorado Christian University Event Center\n8787 W. Alameda Ave. Lakewood\, CO 80226 \n \nAbout the Speakers \nBesides being one of the country’s foremost apologists\, Alex McFarland also hosts the American Family Radio Network’s “Exploring the Word” and the weekly television program “Viral Truth” on the National Religious Broadcasters Network. His writing\, training and conferences in apologetics—the practice of defending the Christian faith in a world where faith in Christ has declined in the current cultural environment—continues to help numerous young people to find salvation in Jesus Christ. \nThrough Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF)\, Mikey Weinstein\, Esq.\, works toward the separation of church and state in the armed forces. Weinstein spent three years working for the Reagan administration as legal counsel\, and served as the first General Counsel to Texas billionaire and presidential candidate H. SUMMARY:Ken Buck: Drain the Swamp
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an important evening to hear from Congressman Ken Buck about his new book\, Drain the Swamp. \nLavish parties. Committee chairmanships for sale. Pay-to-play corruption. Backroom arm-twisting. Votes on major legislation going to the highest bidder. Welcome to Washington\, D.C.\, the swamp that President Donald Trump was elected to drain. \nCongressman Ken Buck is blowing the whistle on the real-life House of Cards in our nation’s capital. Elected in 2014 as president of one of the largest Republican freshman classes ever to enter Congress\, Buck immediately realized why nothing gets done in Congress\, and it isn’t because of political gridlock—in fact\, Republicans and Democrats work together all too well to fleece taxpayers and plunge America deeper into debt. \n“It is an insular process directed by power-hungry party elites who live like kings and govern like bullies\,” Buck reports. \nBuck has witnessed first-hand how the unwritten rules of Congress continually prioritize short-term political gain over lasting\, principled leadership. When Buck tangled with Washington power brokers like former Speaker John Boehner\, he faced petty retaliation. When he insisted Republicans keep their word to voters\, he was berated on the House floor by his own party leaders. When other members of Congress dared to do what they believed to be right for America instead of what the party bosses commanded\, Buck saw them stripped of committee positions and even denied dining room privileges by the petty beltway bullies. \nIn Drain the Swamp\, Buck names names and tells incredible true stories about what really happened behind closed doors in Congress during legislative battles that have ensued over the last two years including budget\, continuing resolutions\, omnibus\, trade promotion authority\, Iran\, and more. If the Trump administration is going to bring real change to Washington\, it first needs to get the whole story—from deep inside the swamp. \nApril 10\, 2017\n7:00pm-8:30pm\nColorado Christian University\n180 S. Garrison St Lakewood\, CO 80226 \n<a href=”https://www.formstack.com/forms/?2621480-Ls5mHs3gx1″ title=”Online Form”>Online Form – CI – Issue Monday – April 10</a> \nOnline Form Maker\n \nAbout the Speaker: \nCongressman Ken Buck is a Republican from Windsor\, Colorado who serves on the House Judiciary Committee and the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. He is also a member of the Judiciary Subcommittees on Immigration and Border Security and Crime\, Terrorism\, Homeland Security and Investigations. He is rated by Heritage Action as the most conservative member of congress. \nOne of three brothers\, Ken worked his way through high school\, college\, and law school as a janitor\, truck driver\, furniture mover\, and a ranch hand. After law school\, Ken worked for Dick Cheney on the Iran-Contra Investigation and then became a prosecutor with the U.S. Department of Justice. He has also served as a District Attorney in Weld County\, Colorado and as a business executive at the Hensel Phelps Construction Company.

SUMMARY:From Transgenderism to the Abolition of Man: Our Posthuman Future
DESCRIPTION:While much has recently been made of movements such as those for gay marriage and transgenderism and their impact on society\, church and family\, they are in fact only the warning signs of a much larger agenda\, namely the redefinition of humanity itself. This talk will introduce listeners to new movements coming out of universities\, think tanks and alternative spirituality groups which question our basic understanding of what it means to be human. In its place they are proposing a vision which would radically alter not only basic social norms\, but also laws\, technology and even biology itself. Some of the issues posthumanism raises include: “human rights” for animals and machines\, biologically merging humans with other species\, and recognized romantic relationships between humans and nonhuman entities. This is sure to be an informative and provocative evening! \nFebruary 13\, 2017\n7:00pm-8:30pm\nColorado Christian University\n180 S. SUMMARY:Issue Monday - The U.S.-China Relationship: The Unfolding Strategic Competition?
DESCRIPTION:Randall Schriver meets with Ma Ying-jeou\, former President of the Republic of China. \nJoin us for a public briefing about the U.S.-China relationship and the unfolding strategic competition with the former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs. \nThe United States and the People’s Republic of China (PRC) may have arrived at an inflection point in the bilateral relationship. While some analysts continue to believe a cooperative relationship is possible\, and that the U.S. and the PRC can form a G-2 type partnership to tackle a range of global challenges\, an increasing number of analyst see a very different trajectory. China’s assertive behavior and confrontational rhetoric suggest we are the leading edge in what will be a long and intense strategic competition for dominance over the Pacific Rim. While American strategists Andrew Marshall\, Robert Kaplan\, and Aaron Friedberg each began foretelling of this great power struggle over a decade ago\, recent events seem to underscore this view. In February 2016\, the U.S. Secretary of Defense\, Ashton Carter\, announced that great power competition has reemerged as the Pentagon’s top priority\, and he expects it will define the next 25 years. Later in the month\, the Commander of the U.S. Pacific Command\, Admiral Harry Harris\, told the Senate Armed Services Committee that China seeks hegemony in East Asia. \nAre the U.S. and China destined for strategic competition? Can the relationship be managed to ensure the competition is benign\, doesn’t result in military conflict\, and allows for cooperation to exist where our interests align? Can robust trade and economic ties be sustained in an environment of growing rivalry? What are the key policy choices U.S. decision makers must make to shape the relationship toward its optimal state? Wise and prudent stewardship of a variety of challenges simultaneously will be required for there to be sustained peace and stability. This discussion will examine the current environment and will explore what policy approaches should be adopted by Washington. \nAbout Randall Schriver\nRandall Schriver served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs responsible for the People’s Republic of China\, Taiwan\, Mongolia\, Hong Kong\, Australia\, New Zealand\, and the Pacific Islands. Prior to joining the Asia Bureau\, he served for two years as Chief of Staff and Senior Policy Advisor to Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage. \nRandall Schriver was the Foreign Policy Director for the Huntsman for President Campaign (2011-12)\, a foreign policy advisor on the McCain for President Campaign (2008)\, on the Bush-Cheney Defense Transition Team (2000-01)\, and worked on the 2000 Bush-Cheney campaign as a member of the Asia Policy Team. \nRandall Schriver is one of five founding partners of Armitage International LLC\, a consulting firm that specializes in international business development and strategies. He is also CEO and President of the Project 2049 Institute\, a non-profit research organization dedicated to the study of security trend lines in Asia. He is also a Senior Associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. \nRSVP Today\nAdmission is free and all are welcome\, but reservations are required. SUMMARY:Issue Monday: Suicide by Doctor
DESCRIPTION:The Centennial Institute is hosting a physician-assisted suicide policy discussion with Carrie Earll\, Carrie Ann Lucas\, and Michael Norton. \nThis legislative session again explored allowing doctor-assisted suicide to be legal in Colorado. Fortunately\, both Democrats and Republicans prevented this from happening. Unfortunately\, the issue continues to arise across the country with more and more states including California making this legal. Join us for an important policy discussion to understand why if such a measure became law\, it would invert the doctor’s time-honored role from the sacred duty of sustaining life to the ghoulish power of terminating it. \nLeading the discussion will be Carrie Earll\, Vice President of Government and Public Policy at Focus on the Family\, Carrie Ann Lucas\, J.D.\, CWLS\, Founder and Executive Director of Disabled Parents Rights\, and Michael J. Norton\, J.D.\, President-General Counsel of the Colorado Freedom Institute. \nSpeakers: \n \nRSVP Today\nAdmission is free and all are welcome\, but reservations are required. SUMMARY:Issue Monday: Doing Immigration Right
