SUMMARY:Issue Forum: Conservatism: A Rediscovery
DESCRIPTION:Join the Centennial Institute at Colorado Christian University for an evening with the premiere political theorist of the modern Western world: Dr. Yoram Hazony. \nThe idea that American conservatism is identical to “classical” liberalism—widely held since the 1960s—is seriously mistaken. Dr. Hazony argues that the best hope for Western democracy is a return to the empiricist\, religious\, and nationalist traditions of America and Britain—the conservative traditions that brought greatness to the English-speaking nations and became the model for national freedom for the entire world. \nHazony will examine how Anglo-American conservatism became a distinctive alternative to divine-right monarchy\, Puritan theocracy\, and liberal revolution. Alameda Ave.\nLakewood\, CO 80226 \nAbout Dr. Yoram Hazony: \nDr. Yoram Hazony is the President of the Herzl Institute in Jerusalem\, and currently serves as Chairman of the Edmund Burke Foundation\, a public affairs institute based in Washington that has hosted the National Conservatism Conference since 2019. \nHis book The Virtue of Nationalism was published by Basic Books in September 2018. It has been selected as Conservative Book of the Year for 2019\, and was an amazon #1 best-seller in both International Diplomacy and Nationalism. \nHis most recent book Conservatism: A Rediscovery was published by Regnery in May 2022. \nHis previous books include The Philosophy of Hebrew Scripture (Cambridge University Press\, 2012)\, which won the second place PROSE award for the best book in the category of Theology and Religion by the Association of American Publishers; The Jewish State: The Struggle for Israel’s Soul (Basic Books\, 2000); and God and Politics in Esther (Cambridge University Press\, 2016). \nHis work has appeared in The Wall St. Journal\, The New York Times\, Fox News\, CNN\, NPR\, Time Magazine\, The New Republic\, National Review\, Commentary\, First Things\, and American Affairs\, among others. The Center’s publishing arm\, Shalem Press\, became Israel’s leading publisher of Western philosophy translated into Hebrew and published Azure magazine. In 2013\, Shalem was accredited to grant Israel’s first Liberal Arts B.A.\, and formally became Shalem College. He served as President of Shalem from 1994-2002\, and as Provost from 2005-2012. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Substance Abuse Counselor in the state of Virginia\, and a Nationally Certified Counselor. \nBienert has worked in the mental health field since 2005. He is recognized for his work within inpatient and outpatient levels of care with individuals struggling to recover from addiction and trauma\, and has worked with children\, adolescents\, adults\, in addition to couples and families. This experience has also led him to pursue further training and expertise\, including neurofeedback and EMDR. \nAs a native of Austria\, Bienert grew up in a country that has deep roots in psychological theory. His bi-cultural background and focus in clinical mental health has led him to a number of volunteer opportunities and leadership roles. As an Austrian with professional experiences and associations in the United States and Europe\, Bienert brings a broad and rich cultural sensitivity to the counseling and other mental health fields. He carries a strong vision that includes the development of counseling services and access to counselor education and professional supervision in countries where these services are still in early developmental stages. \nBienert serves as a steering committee member of the International Registry of Counselor Education and Related Educational Programs (IRCEP)\, where he contributes to quality assurance efforts within International Counselor Education programs. Dr. Bienert is also part of a cross-cultural training team\, which has led him to consultation and teaching efforts in Ukraine\, and he continues to supervise students cross-culturally throughout their clinical training program. \nBienert holds memberships in the Association for Counselor Education & Supervision\, American Counseling Association\, Christian Association for Psychological Studies\, Virginia Counseling Association\, Virginia Association of Addiction Professionals and the European Association for Counseling. \nTim Doescher \n \nTimothy Doescher (pronounced Desher) is an advisor for coalitions communications at The Heritage Foundation\, tasked with maintaining relationships and promoting Heritage policy surrounding tax\, energy\, agriculture\, budget\, and economics in general. \nPrior to this\, Doescher spent two years as a research associate in Heritage’s Project for Economic Growth\, supporting the work of economist Stephen Moore\, and writing frequently on various economic issues. \nBefore joining Heritage\, Doescher served as a representative to Lt. Governor Mary Taylor in the State of Ohio\, focusing on regulatory reform for business\, and speaking to several groups around Ohio. During the George W. Bush presidency\, Doescher was an appointed member of the White House staff\, serving as editor of Presidential Correspondence. \nHe has worked on two presidential campaigns including Sen. Mitt Romney and Sen. Rick Santorum\, worked on legal reform issues at Lawyers for Civil Justice\, and served as a law clerk focusing on immigration and corporate law. \nDoescher is currently co-host of the Heritage Explains Podcast. His work has been published in Investor’s Business Daily\, Fox Business\, The Detroit News\, The Washington Times\, The O.C. Register\, The Daily Signal\, and he has also appeared on national radio and TV programs. \nBorn in Detroit\, MI and raised in the surrounding suburbs\, Doescher earned a B.S. in political science and journalism from Central Michigan University\, and earned his J.D. from the University of Detroit Mercy. \nDoescher currently resides in Northern Virginia\, and when he’s not training for an ultra-marathon\, he’s drumming on the National Community Church worship team. \nHeidi Ganahl \n \nHeidi Ganahl is the founder of Camp Bow Wow\, where she turned a lifelong passion for dogs into the largest pet care franchise in the world. She also founded its sister charity\, the Bow Wow Buddies Foundation\, which rehomed over 10\,000 pups and helped franchisees raise over a million dollars for animal health causes during her tenure. \nGanahl has been named one of Fortune magazine’s 10 Most Promising Entrepreneurs\, and Parade magazine included her in their list of the top women entrepreneurs in the country. In 2013 she founded Moms Fight Back\, and later the Fight Back Foundation\, to tackle the most pressing issues facing our kids today. She also created SheFactor\, a community that aims to impact young women by empowering them to pursue a life that they love. \nGanahl currently serves on the University of Colorado Board of Regents. She has chaired several committees in this role and led major initiatives around free speech\, diversity and addressing the cost of college. \nGanahl earned her a bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Colorado at Boulder and a master’s degree in health care administration from the University of Denver. She is married and has four children. \nJohn Kellner \n \nJohn Kellner is the District Attorney for Colorado’s 18th Judicial District\, encompassing Arapahoe\, Douglas\, Elbert\, and Lincoln counties. Prior to being elected DA\, he worked as a prosecutor in the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office until 2013\, when he joined the 18th Judicial District to start a Cold Case Unit. In 2016\, he was named “Prosecutor of the Year” by the Colorado District Attorney’s Council. \nAfter graduating from law school\, he served on active duty in the U.S. Marine Corps\, where he held various prosecutorial roles. Kellner later deployed to Afghanistan where he helped local government leaders resolve conflicts in the absence of a formal justice system\, helped to build schools for girls who were previously denied access to education\, worked to train the local police force\, and participated in operational planning for military operations and local elections. \nHe continues to serve in the Marine Corps Reserve as a Lieutenant Colonel. Kellner received his undergraduate degree from the University of Florida before going on to graduate with his law degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder\, where he met his wife. \nPaul Larkin \nPaul J. Larkin is the John\, Barbara\, and Victoria Rumpel Senior Legal Research Fellow in the Meese Center for Legal and Judicial Studies. Larkin works on criminal justice policy\, drug policy\, and regulatory policy. \nBefore joining Heritage in September 2011\, Larkin held various positions with the federal government in Washington\, D.C. At the U.S. Department of Justice from 1984 to 1993\, Paul served as an Assistant to the Solicitor General and argued 27 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. He also was an attorney in the Criminal Division’s Organized Crime and Racketeering Section. \nIn 1996-1997\, Larkin served as Counsel to the Senate Judiciary Committee and head of the Crime Unit for Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT)\, then the panel’s chairman. He worked in the Environmental Protection Agency from 1998 to 2004 as a special agent for criminal enforcement\, eventually becoming Special Agent-in-Charge and serving as Acting Director of the EPA Criminal Investigation Division in 2004. His honors include the Secretary of Defense Medal for Meritorious Civilian Service\, which he received in 1994 for representing the military before the Supreme Court. In the private sector\, he worked at two top law firms in Washington\, D.C.\, and as assistant general counsel for Verizon Communications from 2004 to 2009. \nLarkin received his law degree in 1980 from Stanford Law School\, where he was a published member of the Stanford Law Review. He clerked for Judge Robert H. Bork of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. In 2010\, he received a Master’s Degree in Public Policy from George Washington University. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy from Washington and Lee University in Lexington\, Va.\, where he graduated summa cum laude with honors in philosophy. \nBorn and raised in New York\, N.Y.\, Larkin is a life-long New York Yankees and New York Giants fan. \nJo McGuire \n \nJo McGuire is the founder and Executive Director of the National Drug and Alcohol Screening Association\, advocating for safe and drug-free workplaces and communities worldwide. She advises and trains professionals overseeing Safety Sensitive Employees in compliance of federal DOT guidelines for safe work screening programs. She is a featured speaker on the National Marijuana Initiative’s speaker’s bureau and as an accomplished writer and speaker\, Jo has traveled extensively to conduct seminars\, trainings\, conferences\, and leadership retreats for the public\, private\, and non-profit sectors. \nShe was appointed to the Colorado Governor’s Task Force\, convened to recommend a legislative framework for Amendment 64. As a part of the Taxation\, Banking and Civil Law work group\, Jo lent her expertise in the form of recommendations for drug and alcohol testing in the workplace.  She also participated in the 1st annual Latin American Congress on Safe and Drug-Free Workplaces in Santiago\, Chile\, and represented the National Drug and Alcohol Testing Industry at the 2016 United Nations General Assembly to address world drug agreements. Jo works closely with national safety experts to educate state and federal policymakers on the importance of public health policies pertaining to workplace drug and alcohol testing. \nLuke Niforatos \n \nLuke Niforatos serves as the Executive Vice President at SAM\, described by the New York Times as the “well-coordinated opposition” to legalization. Luke’s background is in nonprofit community healthcare\, having helped manage Federally Qualified Health Centers and worked on health disparities. Prior to joining SAM\, Luke was also the Co-Founder of DocBuddy\, a healthcare start-up based in Denver\, Colorado that he later sold. He currently serves as Vice Chair of the Douglas County Public Health Advisory Committee and a member of the Lone Tree Police Advisory committee. \n At SAM\, Luke serves as the principal deputy to the CEO in his roles\, manages the day to day operations of the organization\, and serves as a spokesman on marijuana issues. In 2018\, he was the campaign manager for the successful ballot campaign to defeat legalization in North Dakota\, and led SAM’s legislative victories in more than two dozen states. He has been featured at The Economist’s Cannabis Summit as well as the United Nations’ Commission on Narcotic Drugs\, and in dozens of events and town halls across the country on the subject of drug policy. He has also been featured in many national media outlets\, including Fox News and CNBC\, and his op-eds are regularly published across the country. Luke graduated from the University of Denver\, and his home state of Colorado gives him a unique vantage point on the issue of sound drug policy. \nZack Smith \n \nZack is a legal fellow and manager of the Supreme Court and Appellate Advocacy Program in the Edwin Meese III Center for Legal and Judicial Studies at The Heritage Foundation. \nHe previously served for several years as an assistant United States Attorney in the Northern District of Florida. Prior to that\, he spent two years as an associate in the Washington\, D.C. office of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton\, which he joined after clerking for the Hon. Emmett R. Cox on the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. \nSmith received his undergraduate\, master’s\, and law degrees from the University of Florida.  During law school\, Smith served as the editor-in-chief of the Florida Law Review\, and served on the executive boards of several student organizations\, including the UF Chapter of the Federalist Society. \nChief Kirk Wilson \n \nChief Kirk Wilson took over as the Lone Tree Police Department (LTPD) Chief in January 2017. Since that time\, the LTPD has implemented a successful Victim Advocate program\, civilian Community Service Officers\, and a Community Advisory Board.  Chief Wilson retired from the Colorado Springs Police Department after 22 years in 2016.  While at CSPD\, Chief Wilson spent time in patrol\, investigations\, and internal affairs.  In 2015\, Chief Wilson oversaw the investigation of the tragic mass shooting at the Planned Parenthood facility.  Chief Wilson grew up in Aurora\, Colorado\, and has a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Metro State\, a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from UCCS\, and attended the FBI National Academy in 2012.  He is married and has two adult children. \nJennifer Yates \n \nJennifer Yates a Colorado native and mother of 3 teens\, has been involved in local regulatory policy to advocate for strict nicotine and marijuana protections since 2014. She has passionately worked to educate and inform on the importance of protections for kids and was one of the earliest supporters of statewide youth protections when recreational marijuana became legal in Colorado. Jennifer joined One Chance to Grow Up in 2020 and brings 25+ years of business and management experience to the team.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Centennial Institute at Colorado Christian University for a Candidate Forum highlighting Colorado’s Seventh Congressional District candidates. \nAs the November mid-terms approach\, Colorado’s Seventh Congressional District is one of the few elections in the state to not have an incumbent running for office. Malcolm oversees The Heritage Foundation’s work to increase understanding of the Constitution and the rule of law as vice president of the Institute for Constitutional Government\, director of the think tank’s Edwin Meese III Center for Legal and Judicial Studies\, and the Ed Gilbertson and Sherry Lindberg Gilbertson Senior Legal Fellow. \nMalcolm\, who also is Heritage’s Ed Gilbertson and Sherry Lindberg Gilbertson senior legal fellow\, brings to the challenge a wealth of legal expertise and experience in both the public and private sectors. \nBefore being named director of the Meese Center in July 2013\, Malcolm spearheaded the center’s rule of law programs. His research and writing as senior legal fellow focused on criminal law\, immigration\, national security\, religious liberty and intellectual property. \nThe Meese Center works to educate government officials\, the media and the public about the Constitution and legal principles — and how they affect public policy. The center was founded in 2001 and overseen until early 2013 by the conservative icon whose name it bears\, former Attorney General Edwin Meese III. \nIn addition to his duties at Heritage\, Malcolm is past chairman of the Criminal Law Practice Group of the Federalist Society\, and also serves on the board of trustees of the Washington National Opera\, and the board of directors of the Legal Services Corporation\, which promotes equal access to justice and provides grants for high-quality civil legal assistance to low-income Americans; Boys Town Washington\, D.C.\, which provides homes and services to troubled children and families who are edging toward crisis; and the Barber Family Foundation\, which dispenses college scholarship funds to the children of deserving veterans. \nBefore joining Heritage in 2012\, Malcolm was general counsel at the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom as well as a distinguished practitioner in residence at Pepperdine Law School. An independent and bipartisan panel\, USCIRF reviews reported violations of religious freedom around the world and makes policy recommendations to the president\, the secretary of state and Congress. \nFrom 2004 to 2009\, Malcolm was executive vice president and director of worldwide anti-piracy operations for the Motion Picture Association of America. \nHe served as a deputy assistant attorney general in the Department of Justice’s Criminal Division from 2001 to 2004\, where he oversaw sections on computer crime and intellectual property\, domestic security\, child exploitation and obscenity\, and special investigations. Immediately prior to that\, he was a founding partner in the Atlanta law firm of Malcolm & Schroeder\, LLP. \nFrom 1990 to 1997\, Malcolm was an assistant U.S. attorney in Atlanta\, assigned to the fraud and public corruption section\, and also an associate independent counsel\, investigating fraud and abuse in the Department of Housing and Urban Development. He was honored with the Director’s Award for Superior Performance for his work as an assistant U.S. attorney in the successful prosecution of Walter Leroy Moody Jr.\, who assassinated an 11th Circuit judge and the head of the Savannah chapter of the NAACP. \nMalcolm began his law career as a law clerk to a federal district court judge and a federal appellate court judge as well as an associate at the Atlanta-based law firm of Sutherland\, Asbill & Brennan (now Eversheds Sutherland). \nMalcolm is a graduate of Harvard Law School and holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Columbia College. Born in New York City\, he grew up in Tenafly\, N.J. He and his wife\, Mary Lee\, currently reside in Washington\, D.C. They have two adult children\, Andy and Amanda.

In addition to a personal conviction in their own potential\, kids need the nurturing structure\, the consistent discipline\, and the moral direction that social institutions traditionally have provided. Rowe is a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute\, where he focuses on education and upward mobility\, family formation\, and adoption. Mr. Rowe is the co-founder & CEO of Vertex Partnership Academies\, a new network of character-based\, International Baccalaureate public charter high schools opening in the Bronx in 2022\, and the chairman of the board of Spence-Chapin\, a nonprofit adoption services organization that provides adoption and adoption support services. Rowe is a senior visiting fellow at the Woodson Center\, and a writer for the 1776 Unites Campaign. He is a trustee at the Thomas B. Fordham Institute and a senior advisor for the Foundation Against Intolerance & Racism (FAIR For All)\, Parents Defending Education\, and the National Summer School Initiative (NSSI). \nMr. Rowe is widely published and quoted in the popular press\, including The Wall Street Journal\, USA Today\, C-SPAN\, the New York Post\, the Washington Examiner\, Education Week and Education Next. In addition to serving ten years as CEO of Public Prep\, a nonprofit network of public charter schools based in the South Bronx and Lower East Side of Manhattan\, he was deputy director of postsecondary success at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Rowe won two public service Emmys while serving as the senior vice president of strategic partnerships and public affairs at MTV. He was the director of the strategy and performance measurement at the USA Freedom Corps office in the White House and co-founder and president of Third Millennium Media. Mr. Rowe was also a senior staff member for Teach For America in its early days. \nAfter receiving a high school diploma in electrical engineering from Brooklyn Technical High School\, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science Engineering from Cornell University’s College of Engineering and then an MBA from Harvard Business School\, where he was the first black Editor-In-Chief of the Harbus\, the Harvard Business School newspaper. Ph.D. is executive vice president of the Religious Freedom Institute in Washington\, DC and Scholar-at-Large and the former dean of the Robertson School of Government at Regent University.   His research and teaching focus on religion\, ethics\, and international affairs. Patterson previously taught at Georgetown University and has extensive government experience\, including service as a White House Fellow and special assistant to the director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management\, two stints in the State Department’s Bureau of Political and Military Affairs\, and over twenty years of service as an officer and commander in the Air National Guard.  Patterson has spoken for many government audiences such as the French Department of Defense\, U.S. Military Academy (West Point)\, the U.S. Naval Academy (Annapolis)\, the Armed Forces Chaplains Center\, National Defense University\, the Pentagon\, the Naval Postgraduate School\, the Foreign Service Institute\, and other government venues.  In addition to dozens of peer-reviewed academic articles\, he is the author or editor of eighteen books\, including Just War and Christian Traditions (with J. DESCRIPTION:Join the Centennial Institute at Colorado Christian University for a rally in support of the Right to Life prevailing in America’s highest court. \nCould 2022 be the year Roe v. Wade is reversed? \nIn 1973\, the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling in Roe v. Wade shook the foundation of the United States. As abortion was effectively protected throughout the U.S.\, many began the long fight to reclaim the Right to Life\, as guaranteed in America’s founding. Now\, the Supreme Court has chosen yet again to hear an abortion case: Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. \nIn 2018\, the Jackson Women’s Health Organization challenged Mississippi’s Gestational Age Act\, prohibiting abortions after the fifteenth week of pregnancy except in the cases of a medical emergency. The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments for Dobbs on December 1\, 2021. DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Owen Strachan\, author of Christianity and Wokeness: How the Social Justice Movement is Hijacking the Gospel – and the Way to Stop It\, for our November Distinguished Lecture Series. \nThe “wokeness” that emerged from the social unrest of 2020 has swept through schools\, businesses\, and even sports. Driven by the radical ideologies of Critical Race Theory and intersectionality\, it has destabilized public and private life—including the Church. \nMany evangelicals have joined the crusade. Gripped by a desire for justice and rightly grieved by past evils like slavery\, many pastors are preaching the woke gospel—identifying “whiteness” (an imaginary concept) with “white supremacy\,” calling bewildered Christians to repent of their supposed guilt for the sins of past generations. \nDr. Owen Strachan will discuss how this is not true justice\, nor is it true Christianity. While wokeness employs biblical vocabulary and concepts\, it is an alternative religion\, far from Christianity in both its methods and its fruit. DESCRIPTION:For our October Distinguished Lecture Series\, Jack Posobiec will be discussing his new book The Antifa: Stories from Inside the Black Bloc. \nFew in the media have followed Antifa more closely – and have the scars to prove it – than journalist Jack Posobiec. \nFrom infiltrating their 2016 meetings where they planned their attack on Trump’s inauguration to going undercover in Seattle’s CHAZ in 2020\, Posobiec has never backed down from exposing the true nature of Antifa. \nPosobiec will discuss the secret history of this radical anarchist group while integrating his personal encounters with some of its most hardcore and violent members. While few Americans were aware of Antifa’s existence until recently\, it is actually part of a violent revolutionary tradition that dates back more than a hundred years. SUMMARY:20th Anniversary of 9/11 and Legacy of the Afghan War
DESCRIPTION:On September 11\, 2001\, terror unfolded in the sky and came to a devastating end at the World Trade Center\, the Pentagon\, and a field near Shanksville\, PA. That day will forever be etched in the minds of those who witnessed those horrific images as they occurred in real time. In the face of destruction\, American heroism and patriotism united the country to fight terrorism but also to begin the healing process. \nTwenty years later\, the nation is shocked again by headlines about the fall of Afghanistan. Two decades of war and efforts to bring stability and human rights to the Afghans stopped in a matter of days. Thirteen U.S. soldiers were killed during the withdrawal. DESCRIPTION:Ilya Shapiro\, director of the Robert A. Levy Center for Constitutional Studies at the Cato Institute\, will lecture on his latest book\, Supreme Disorder: Judicial Nominations and the Politics of America’s Highest Court. \nPolitics have always intruded on Supreme Court appointments. But although the Framers would recognize the way justices are nominated and confirmed today\, something is different. Why have appointments to the high court become one of the most explosive features of our system of government? \nAs Ilya Shapiro makes clear in Supreme Disorder\, this problem is part of a larger phenomenon. As government has grown\, its laws reaching even further into our lives\, the courts that interpret those laws have become enormously powerful. If we fight over each new appointment as though everything were at stake\, it’s because it is. \nWhen decades of constitutional corruption have left us subject to an all-powerful tribunal\, passions are sure to flare on the infrequent occasions when the political system has an opportunity to shape it. Grotelueschen\, PhD\, teaches strategic studies and serves as the Assistant Head of Academics as well as the Chief of Majors Academics in the Department of Military and Strategic Studies at the U.S. Air Force Academy near Colorado Springs\, Colorado. He previously served as Professor of History while holding a Senior Military Faculty position in the Department of History. \nDuring more than a decade of teaching at the Air Force Academy he has taught a wide range of courses covering strategy\, military thought\, history\, statesmanship\, and area studies. He is the recipient of the Outstanding Academy Educator Award\, the McDermott Award for Research Excellence in the Humanities\, and the Orrison Award for cadet advising and mentoring. \nA 27 year Air Force veteran and former aircraft maintenance officer\, he worked directly with many different types of aircraft (A-10\, C-12\, C-17\, C-130\, E-3\, F-16\, KC-10\, KC-135\, RQ-4\, and U-2)\, and commanded the 380th Expeditionary Maintenance Operations Squadron at Al Dhafra Air Base\, UAE\, in 2004-2005. Dr Grotelueschen also served as the Deputy Chief of Engagement Integration in the Strategy\, Plans\, and Programs Directorate (A5) at US Air Forces Africa\, Ramstein AB\, Germany. He deployed as a United Nations peacekeeper in the United Nations Mission in Liberia\, where he worked in the mission’s Joint Logistics Operations Centre and helped plan and execute the successful national elections there in 2011. \nHe graduated with Academic Distinction from the USAF Academy\, earned an MA in Military and Diplomatic History from the University of Calgary\, and holds a PhD in History from Texas A&M University. He is the author or editor of many articles and books\, including The AEF Way of War: The American Army and Combat in World War I (Cambridge\, 2007)\, which has been selected repeatedly by multiple US Army Chiefs of Staff for their Professional Reading Lists. Most recently he authored Into the Fight: April-June 1918 for the US Army Center of Military History’s Campaigns of World War I series.

SUMMARY:Online Event: Was Jesus a Socialist?
DESCRIPTION:Economist and historian Lawrence W. Reed has been hearing people say “Jesus was a socialist” for fifty years. And it has always bothered him. \nNow he is doing something about it. \nHis new book demolishes the claim that Jesus was a socialist. Jesus called on earthly governments to redistribute wealth? Or centrally plan the economy? Or even impose a welfare state? \nHardly. \nPoint by point\, Reed answers the claims of socialists and progressives who try to enlist Jesus in their causes. As he reveals\, nothing in the New Testament supports their contentions.\nWas Jesus a Socialist? could not be more timely. Socialism has made a shocking comeback in America. Poll after poll shows that young Americans have a positive image of socialism. In fact\, more than half say they would rather live in a socialist country than in a capitalist one. \nAnd as socialism has come back into vogue\, more and more of its advocates have tried to convince us that Jesus was a socialist. \nThis rhetoric has had an impact. According to a 2016 poll by the Barna Group\, Americans think socialism aligns better with Jesus’s teachings than capitalism does. When respondents were asked which of that year’s presidential candidates aligned closest to Jesus’s teachings\, a self-proclaimed “democratic socialist” came out on top. DESCRIPTION:Michael Barone will discuss his latest book\, How America’s Political Parties Change (and How They Don’t). The election of 2016 prompted journalists and political scientists to write obituaries for the Republican Party—or prophecies of a new dominance. But it was all rather familiar. Whenever one of our two great parties has a setback\, we’ve heard: “This is the end of the Democratic Party\,” or\, “The Republican Party is going out of existence.” Yet both survive\, and thrive. \nWe have the oldest and third oldest political parties in the world—the Democratic Party founded in 1832 to reelect Andrew Jackson\, the Republican Party founded in 1854 to oppose slavery in the territories. They are older than almost every American business\, most American colleges\, and many American churches. Both have seemed to face extinction in the past\, and have rebounded to be competitive again. How have they managed it? \nMichael Barone\, longtime co-author of The Almanac of American Politics\, brings a deep understanding of our electoral history to the question and finds a compelling answer. He illuminates how both parties have adapted\, swiftly or haltingly\, to shifting opinion and emerging issues\, to economic change and cultural currents\, to demographic flux. At the same time\, each has maintained a constant character. In April 2009\, Barone joined the Washington Examiner\, leaving his position of 18 years at U.S. News & World Report. He is based at the American Enterprise Institute as a resident fellow. He has written numerous books and essays on American political and demographic history.
