SUMMARY:Distinguished Lecture Series: Irreversible Damage: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughters
DESCRIPTION:Join Abigail Shrier\, author of the book Irreversible Damage: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughters\, for our February Distinguished Lecture series. \nUntil just a few years ago\, gender dysphoria—severe discomfort in one’s biological sex—was vanishingly rare. It was typically found in less than .01 percent of the population\, emerged in early childhood\, and afflicted males almost exclusively. \nBut today whole groups of female friends in colleges\, high schools\, and even middle schools across the country are coming out as “transgender.” These are girls who had never experienced any discomfort in their biological sex until they heard a coming-out story from a speaker at a school assembly or discovered the internet community of trans “influencers.” \nUnsuspecting parents are awakening to find their daughters in thrall to hip trans YouTube stars and “gender-affirming” educators and therapists who push life-changing interventions on young girls—including medically unnecessary double mastectomies and puberty blockers that can cause permanent infertility. \nAbigail Shrier\, a writer for the Wall Street Journal\, has dug deep into the trans epidemic\, talking to the girls\, their agonized parents\, and the counselors and doctors who enable gender transitions\, as well as to “detransitioners”—young women who bitterly regret what they have done to themselves. \nComing out as transgender immediately boosts these girls’ social status\, Shrier finds\, but once they take the first steps of transition\, it is not easy to walk back. She offers urgently needed advice about how parents can protect their daughters. \nA generation of girls is at risk. Abigail Shrier’s essential book will help you understand what the trans craze is and how you can inoculate your child against it—or how to retrieve her from this dangerous path. \nMonday\, February 15\, 2021\n7:00pm – 8:30pm MT\nWatch here: https://www.youtube.com/c/CentennialInstituteCCU \nAbout Abigail Shrier\nAbigail Shrier is a writer for the Wall Street Journal. She is a graduate of Columbia College\, where she received the Euretta J. Kellett Fellowship; the University of Oxford; and Yale Law School. She lives in Los Angeles\, CA. \n

SUMMARY:Distinguished Lecture Series: Ethics of COVID-19 Vaccines
DESCRIPTION:The COVID-19 vaccine has raised ethical questions. During our January Distinguished Lecture Series\, Dr. Ryan Anderson\, founder and editor in chief of Public Discourse\, explores many of these questions. Is COVID-19 vaccine developed from cell lines derived from an aborted fetus? If so\, should a citizen of conscience who is opposed to abortion avail herself of it to protect herself and her loved ones during this time of pandemic? What are other ethical implications around vaccines? Should governments make vaccinations mandatory? Could businesses refuse service without a vaccine “passport?” Colorado has mandated that a 22-year-old\, healthy\, “frontline journalist” receive the vaccines before a 64-year-old with lung problems. Is this vaccine distribution plan ethical? What is the government’s ethical role in creating\, researching\, informing\, distributing\, and mandating vaccinations? \nDistinguished Lecture Series: Ethics of COVID-19 Vaccines\nDr. Ryan Anderson\nWednesday\, January 13\, 2021\n6:30 pm MT\nWatch: https://www.youtube.com/c/CentennialInstituteCCU  \nAbout Dr. Ryan Anderson \nRyan T. SUMMARY:Online Event: Was Jesus a Socialist?
DESCRIPTION:Economist and historian Lawrence W. Reed has been hearing people say “Jesus was a socialist” for fifty years. And it has always bothered him. \nNow he is doing something about it. \nHis new book demolishes the claim that Jesus was a socialist. Jesus called on earthly governments to redistribute wealth? Or centrally plan the economy? Or even impose a welfare state? \nHardly. \nPoint by point\, Reed answers the claims of socialists and progressives who try to enlist Jesus in their causes. As he reveals\, nothing in the New Testament supports their contentions.\nWas Jesus a Socialist? could not be more timely. Socialism has made a shocking comeback in America. Poll after poll shows that young Americans have a positive image of socialism. In fact\, more than half say they would rather live in a socialist country than in a capitalist one. \nAnd as socialism has come back into vogue\, more and more of its advocates have tried to convince us that Jesus was a socialist. \nThis rhetoric has had an impact. According to a 2016 poll by the Barna Group\, Americans think socialism aligns better with Jesus’s teachings than capitalism does. When respondents were asked which of that year’s presidential candidates aligned closest to Jesus’s teachings\, a self-proclaimed “democratic socialist” came out on top. Sure enough\, the same candidate earned more primary votes from under-thirty voters than did the eventual Democratic and Republican nominees combined. \nAnd in a 2019 survey\, more than 70 percent of millennials said they were likely to vote for a socialist. \nOnline Event: Was Jesus a Socialist?\nWednesday\, September 16\, 2020\n7:00 PM – 8:30 PM MT\nWatch here: https://www.youtube.com/CentennialInstituteCCU \nAbout Lawrence Reed: Lawrence W. Reed is president emeritus of the Foundation of Economic Education (FEE) and the author or editor of several books\, including Excuse Me\, Professor: Challenging the Myths of Progressivism and Real Heroes: Inspiring True Stories of Courage\, Character\, and Conviction (ISI Books). Prior to joining FEE in 2008\, he served for twenty years as president of the Mackinac Center for Public Policy. He also taught economics full-time for nearly a decade. A frequent guest on radio and television\, Reed has written thousands of articles and delivers dozens of speeches each year. He has received the Alumni Achievement Award from his alma mater\, Grove City College.

SUMMARY:Reviewing Colorado's Police Reform Legislation
DESCRIPTION:Following the death of George Floyd\, the Colorado legislature passed a bi-partisan bill reforming Colorado policing. How does this bill improve or harm Colorado policing? Is Colorado facing a systemic racist policing problem? What are the positive and negative effects Black Lives Matter is having on policing in America? Why is Denver seeing a spike in violent crime? Are police doing enough to stop destructive protests in Denver and Aurora? \nExplore these questions and more as the Centennial Institute hosts George Brauchler\, D.A. 18th Judicial District\, and Patrick Neville\, House Minority Leader\, for a discussion. \nTuesday\, June 30\, 2020 \n2:00 pm – 3:00 pm MT

SUMMARY:The Sin of Racism and America's Promise of Equality\, Part 2 - Solutions
DESCRIPTION:  \nFollowing an extremely popular and well-received discussion on the sin of racism and America’s promise of equality\, the same panel is back to discuss solutions further. In the weeks since the first discussion\, congress\, states\, and municipalities have introduced legislation to reform policing. What’s right and what’s wrong with this approach? Leftist organizations are seeking to go further in defunding the police\, tearing down statues\, requiring reparations\, and even creating autonomous zones. How does America address the challenges of bad policing and racism without dividing the nation? What are other solutions to improving access to the American dream for black Americans? \nJoin the Centennial Institute\, Antonia Okafor Cover\, CJ Pearson\, Dr. Biff Gore\, and Casper Stockham to explore these issues and more. \nThursday\, June 25\, 2020 \n2:00 pm – 3:00 pm MT

SUMMARY:The Sin of Racism and America’s Promise of Equality
DESCRIPTION:Colorado Christian University mourns the tragic death and unjust killing of George Floyd. Sadly\, this is not an isolated incident and points to a deeper racism that festers in our land. At the same time\, we also condemn those who seek to exploit the tragedy of this situation by looting\, torching vehicles\, burning buildings\, defacing national monuments and destroying hundreds of businesses. The number of people killed as a result of violent protest represents a disturbing breakdown in the rule of law and cannot be excused as a just response to this incident.\nHow do we seek justice for the black community? How do we improve policing in America? How do we protect our cities and local communities from violent riots? How does America live up to its claims of one Nation under God\, indivisible\, with liberty and justice for all? \nJoin the Centennial Institute and community leaders Antonia Okafor Cover\, CJ Pearson\, Dr. Biff Gore\, and Casper Stockham for a Zoom discussion on these issues. \nThe Sin of Racism and America’s Promise of Equality\nThursday\, June 11\, 2020\n1:00 pm MT \nWatch here: https://www.youtube.com/CentennialInstitute/

SUMMARY:Michael Barone on American Politics 2020
DESCRIPTION:Michael Barone will discuss his latest book\, How America’s Political Parties Change (and How They Don’t). The election of 2016 prompted journalists and political scientists to write obituaries for the Republican Party—or prophecies of a new dominance. But it was all rather familiar. Whenever one of our two great parties has a setback\, we’ve heard: “This is the end of the Democratic Party\,” or\, “The Republican Party is going out of existence.” Yet both survive\, and thrive. \nWe have the oldest and third oldest political parties in the world—the Democratic Party founded in 1832 to reelect Andrew Jackson\, the Republican Party founded in 1854 to oppose slavery in the territories. They are older than almost every American business\, most American colleges\, and many American churches. Both have seemed to face extinction in the past\, and have rebounded to be competitive again. How have they managed it? \nMichael Barone\, longtime co-author of The Almanac of American Politics\, brings a deep understanding of our electoral history to the question and finds a compelling answer. He illuminates how both parties have adapted\, swiftly or haltingly\, to shifting opinion and emerging issues\, to economic change and cultural currents\, to demographic flux. At the same time\, each has maintained a constant character. The Republican Party appeals to “typical Americans” as understood at a given time\, and the Democratic Party represents a coalition of “out-groups.” They are the yin and yang of American political life\, together providing vehicles for expressing most citizens’ views in a nation that has always been culturally\, religiously\, economically\, and ethnically diverse. \nThe election that put Donald Trump in the White House may have appeared to signal a dramatic realignment\, but in fact it involved less change in political allegiances than many before\, and it does not portend doom for either party. How America’s Political Parties Change (and How They Don’t) astutely explains why these two oft-scorned institutions have been so resilient. \nMonday\, April 20\, 2020\n5:00 pm – 6:30 pm MT\nOn YouTube Here: https://www.youtube.com/user/CentennialInstitute/ \n \nAbout Michael Barone \nMichael Barone is an American conservative political analyst\, historian\, pundit and journalist. He is known for being the principal author of The Almanac of American Politics\, a highly detailed reference work on Congress and state politics; it has been published biennially by National Journal since 1972. The Almanac has been called “definitive and essential for anyone writing seriously about campaigns and Congress.” Barone is also a regular commentator on United States elections and political trends for the Fox News Channel. In April 2009\, Barone joined the Washington Examiner\, leaving his position of 18 years at U.S. News & World Report. He is based at the American Enterprise Institute as a resident fellow. He has written numerous books and essays on American political and demographic history.

SUMMARY:The Witness of the Church and the Technology of God
DESCRIPTION:Tertullian once asked\, “What has Athens to do with Jerusalem?” Today we might ask the same question of Silicon Valley. Many in the Church view technological innovation at best as a secular matter\, or at worst as a threat to family and congregational life. But in a broader view\, the spread of the Gospel has always ridden the tides of technological change. What might a theology of technology look like? And how might the Church today adopt and adapt new and emerging technologies in ways that advance the kingdom of God? \nThe Witness of the Church and the Technology of God\nMonday\, December 9\, 2019\n7:00 pm – 8:30 pm\nColorado Christian University\nLeprino Hall 170\n8787 W. Alameda Ave. Lakewood\, CO 80226 \nAbout Timothy Dalrymple: \nTimothy Dalrymple is the President and CEO of Christianity Today Magazine and ChristianityToday.com. Founded by Billy Graham\, Christianity Today has been called\, “evangelicalism’s flagship magazine.” \nAfter graduating from Stanford with a double major in philosophy and religious studies\, Tim earned an MDiv at Princeton Theological Seminary and a PhD in modern Western religious thought at Harvard University. Along the way\, he also served in youth ministry\, prison chaplaincy\, and graduate and faculty ministry with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. \nTim’s desire to thoughtfully engage the public square and to find creative ways of sharing the gospel in the new media marketplace found expression after Harvard in his work with the multi-religious website Patheos (2008–2014). First\, he was managing editor of Patheos’s evangelical channel\, then director of content and vice-president of business development. \nIn 2013 Dalrymple founded Polymath\, a creative agency that helps clients with branding\, design\, web\, video\, marketing and communications\, and content development. Its clients have included the Museum of the Bible\, International Justice Mission\, the American Enterprise Institute\, and Indiana Wesleyan University. \n \nOnline Form – DL – Timothy Dalrymple – 12.9.19 \nPowered by Formstack

SUMMARY:In Search of Ancient Roots
DESCRIPTION:Protestant evangelicalism is in crisis. Today it is increasingly difficult for Protestants to identify what counts as distinctively Protestant\, much less what counts as evangelical. As evangelicals increasingly lose contact with the churches and traditions descending from the Reformation\, and as relations with Roman Catholicism continue to thaw\, it becomes harder to explain why one should remain committed to the Reformation in the face of perceived deficits and theological challenges with the Protestant tradition. A common complaint about Protestant evangelicalism is its apparent disconnect from ancient Christianity. The antiquity and catholicity of Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy seem to outshine the relative novelty of the Reformation. Some evangelical churches appear to be uninterested in the ancient historical roots of their faith as well as being liturgically and doctrinally unstable. Many within evangelicalism seem to have accepted at face value the suggestion that the evangelical faith is no more than a threadbare descendant of ancient Christianity. The result is that a number of younger Protestants in recent years have abandoned evangelicalism\, turning instead to practices and traditions that appear more rooted in the early church. In Search of Ancient Roots examines this phenomenon and places it within a wider historical context. Ken Stewart argues that the evangelical tradition in fact has a much healthier track record of interacting with Christian antiquity than it is usually given credit for. He surveys five centuries of Protestant engagement with the ancient church. \nMonday\, November 18\, 2019\n7:00pm – 8:30pm MT\nColorado Christian University\nAnschutz Student Center Great Room\n8787 W. Alameda Ave. Lakewood\, CO 80226 \nAbout Dr. Ken Stewart \nDr. Ken Stewart is a specialist in the history of Christianity from the Reformation to the present with special interest in the development of the evangelical Protestant tradition. He has a growing interest in early Christianity and the transmission of doctrine from the early church forward to our time. He also teaches early modern European history and the two-semester Christian Doctrine sequence required for sophomores. Dr. Stewart has been a Professor of Theological Studies at Covenant College\, and on their faculty since 1997. \nOnline Form – DL – K. Stewart – 11.18.19 \nPowered by Formstack

SUMMARY:Crucible of Faith
DESCRIPTION:One of America’s foremost scholars of religion examines the tumultuous era that gave birth to the modern Judeo-Christian tradition. In Crucible of Faith\, Philip Jenkins argues that much of the Judeo-Christian tradition we know today was born between 250-50 BCE\, during a turbulent “Crucible Era.” It was during these years that Judaism grappled with Hellenizing forces and produced new religious ideas that reflected and responded to their changing world. By the time of the fall of the Temple in 70 CE\, concepts that might once have seemed bizarre became normalized-and thus passed on to Christianity and later Islam. Drawing widely on contemporary sources from outside the canonical Old and New Testaments\, Jenkins reveals an era of political violence and social upheaval that ultimately gave birth to entirely new ideas about religion\, the afterlife\, Creation and the Fall\, and the nature of God and Satan. \nMonday\, October 14\, 2019\n7:00pm – 8:30pm MT\nColorado Christian University\nAnschutz Student Center Great Room\n8787 W. Alameda Ave.\, Lakewood\, CO 80226 \n \n  \nAbout Dr. Philip Jenkins\nPhilip Jenkins is a Distinguished Professor of History at Baylor University. His many books include The Next Christendom (2002) and The Lost History of Christianity (2008). His most recent title is Crucible of Faith: The Ancient Revolution That Made Our Modern Religious World (Basic Books\, 2017). \nOnline Form – DL – P. Jenkins – 10.14.19 \nPowered by Formstack

SUMMARY:America’s Marriage Divide: Why Marriage is Flourishing among the Upper Middle Class and Floundering among Everybody Else
DESCRIPTION:When it comes to family life\, men\, women\, and children in educated and affluent communities are thriving: they enjoy strong and stable families\, low rates of divorce and nonmarital childbearing\, and comparatively high rates of marital quality. By contrast\, working-class and poor families are floundering: divorce is high\, single parenthood is common\, and marital quality is comparatively low. This talk by U.Va. Professor Bradford Wilcox explains why there is a marriage divide in America\, and why it matters that so many children\, men\, and women in poor and working-class communities don’t have access to “The Marital Privilege.” \nTuesday\, April 9\, 2019\n7:00 PM – 8:30 PM MT\nColorado Christian University\n8787 W. Alameda Ave. Lakewood\, CO 80226\nLeprino Hall 170 \nAbout Dr. Brad Wilcox\nDr. Wilcox is Professor of Sociology at the University of Virginia and a member of the James Madison Society at Princeton University. As an undergraduate\, he was a Jefferson Scholar at U.Va. His research focuses on marriage\, and on the ways that gender\, religion\, class\, and children influence the quality and stability of American family life. He has published articles on marriage\, cohabitation\, fatherhood\, and religion and family life in The American Sociological Review\, Social Forces\, The Journal of Marriage and Family\, and The Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion. SUMMARY:Dr. Charles Murray and the Pulse of American Culture
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Charles Murray has his finger on the pulse of American culture. He argues that what divides America is not race or party but economic class and virtue. \nMurray will be speaking about his book Coming Apart\, what fellow scholar Brad Wilcox called a “sobering portrait of a nation where millions of people are losing touch with the founding virtues that have long lent American lives purpose\, direction and happiness.” \nCome and hear how American culture has evolved even further in the past decade\, and what needs to be done to address our root problems. \n  \nMonday\, February 11\, 2019\n7:00 PM – 8:30 PM\nColorado Christian University\nLeprino Hall 170\n8787 W. Alameda Ave.\nLakewood\, CO 80226 \n\nDr. Charles Murray \nCharles Murray is the F.A. Hayek Emeritus Chair in Cultural Studies at the American Enterprise Institute. A political scientist\, author\, and libertarian\, he first came to national attention in 1984 with the publication of “Losing Ground\,” which has been credited as the intellectual foundation for the Welfare Reform Act of 1996. His 1994 New York Times bestseller “The Bell Curve” (Free Press\, 1994)\, coauthored with the late Richard J. Herrnstein\, sparked heated controversy for its analysis of the role of IQ in shaping America’s class structure. Dr. Murray’s other books include “What It Means to Be a Libertarian” (1997)\, “Human Accomplishment” (2003)\, “In Our Hands” (2006)\, “Real Education” (2008)\, and the New York Times bestseller “Coming Apart” (2012). His most recent book\, “By the People: Rebuilding Liberty Without Permission” (Crown Forum\, 2015) urges Americans to stem governmental overreach and use America’s unique civil society to put government back in its place. \nDr. Murray has Ph.D. in political science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a B.A. in history from Harvard University. \nOnline Form – CCU – C Murray – Feb 11 \nPowered by Formstack

SUMMARY:Challenges with Government-Run Education
DESCRIPTION:Government-run education in Colorado is facing serious challenges. A record number of Colorado families are choosing homeschool or charter schools. According to U.S. News and World Report\, four out of the top five performing high schools in Colorado are charter schools. Senator Ben Sasse criticized government-run education as an effort to “homogenize” our kids. Faith leader James Dobson said\, “Today\, public schools don’t offer much in the way of values education\, and if they do\, it’s often wrong.” Some even believe what goes on in public schools can be harmful to a student’s development and learning. \nStill\, a vast majority of Coloradans choose government-run education for their children. How does Colorado improve education? What are the hurdles and challenges facing policymakers\, educators\, and parents? Should Colorado take steps to embrace vouchers and provide religious school choice for parents? How do we achieve the best education for Coloradans? \nJoin the Centennial Institute at Colorado Christian University for this important conversation on the challenges facing government-run education. \nJanuary 14\, 2019\n7:00 PM – 8:30 PM\nColorado Christian University\nLeprino Hall 170\n8787 W. Alameda Ave.\nLakewood\, CO 80226 \nSpeakers:\nDr. Deb Scheffel is the Dean of Dean of the School of Education at Colorado Christian University. SUMMARY:Early Childhood Care and Education Policy Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Should America expand paid maternity leave? How do you balance the needs of parents\, children\, and small business owners? Should the state of Colorado provide free preschool and kindergarten? Are there free-market-based policies that can serve parents\, children\, and business owners? What are other options to support early childhood education? What’s working for parents and children and what’s broken now? \nEvery day\, millions of working parents struggle with keeping careers on track while raising children\, and finding balance between child rearing and building a career is exceptionally hard. The first 1\,000 days of a child’s life\, in particular\, set the foundation upon which all future development and learning takes place. Employers and our wider society benefit when children get the right start and thrive\, and society and employers win when working parents are productive. Although both beneficiaries can do far more to ensure working parents are equipped to nurture their children and advance their careers\, state and federal policies have not been responsive or supportive of this fundamental social issue. If work is truly the path toward economic security and upward mobility\, public and workplace policies that allow parents to succeed in the workforce\, and do right by their children\, are vital to the future success of our country. \nThe focus of the Early Childhood Care & Education Policy Distinguished Lecture will be to illuminate market-based policies that strike a healthy balance between family wellbeing and a prosperous economy. The featured speakers will include national policy experts\, Katharine Stevens\, who leads the early-childhood program at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI)\, and Nadine Maenza\, the founding Executive Director of Patriot Voices\, where she leads the organization’s special emphasis on public policies that help working families. The panelists will also include State Senator-Elect Brittany Pettersen and State Representative Alec Garnett\, who will provide perspective on early childhood education policies in our state. Gloria Higgins\, the President of Executives Partnering to Invest in Children (EPIC) will serve as the panel moderator\, and will shed light on the employer’s perspective. \nMonday\, December 10\, 2018\n7:00pm – 8:30pm\nColorado Christian University\nLeprino Hall 170\n8787 W. SUMMARY:When Harry Became Sally: Responding to the Transgender Moment
DESCRIPTION:The transgender movement has hit breakneck speed. In the space of a year\, it’s gone from something that most Americans had never heard of to a cause claiming the mantle of civil rights. \nBut can a boy truly be “trapped” in a girl’s body? Can modern medicine really “reassign” sex? Is sex something “assigned” in the first place? What’s the loving response to a friend or child experiencing a gender-identity conflict? What should our law say on these issues? \nDr. Ryan T. Anderson will provide thoughtful answers to these questions and more as he presents his latest book\, When Harry Became Sally: Responding to the Transgender Moment. Drawing on the best insights from biology\, psychology\, and philosophy\, Ryan T. Anderson offers a balanced approach to the policy issues\, a nuanced vision of human embodiment\, and a sober and honest survey of the human costs of getting human nature wrong. \nHe reveals a grim contrast between the media’s sunny depiction and the often sad realities of gender-identity struggles. He introduces listeners to people who tried to “transition” but found themselves no better off. Especially troubling is the suffering felt by adults who were encouraged to transition as children but later came to regret it. \nAnd there is a reason that many do regret it. As Anderson shows\, the most helpful therapies focus not on achieving the impossible—changing bodies to conform to thoughts and feelings—but on helping people accept and even embrace the truth about their bodies and reality. This discussion will be of particular interest to parents who fear how an ideological school counselor might try to steer their child. The best evidence shows that the vast majority of children naturally grow out of any gender-conflicted phase. But no one knows how new school policies might affect children indoctrinated to believe that they really are trapped in the “wrong” body. \nThroughout his new book\, Anderson highlights the various contradictions at the heart of this moment: How it embraces the gnostic idea that the real self is something other than the body\, while also embracing the idea that nothing but the physical exists. How it relies on rigid sex stereotypes—in which dolls are for girls and trucks are for boys—while also insisting that gender is purely a social construct\, and that there are no meaningful differences between women and men. How it assumes that feelings of identity deserve absolute respect\, while the facts of our embodiment do not. How it preaches that people should be free to do as they please and define their own truth—while enforcing a ruthless campaign to coerce anyone who dares to dissent. \nEveryone has something at stake in today’s debates about gender identity. Analyzing education and employment policies\, Obama-era bathroom and locker-room mandates\, politically correct speech codes and religious-freedom violations\, Anderson shows how the law is being used to coerce and penalize those who believe the truth about human nature. And he shows how Americans can begin to push back with principle and prudence\, compassion and grace. \nMonday\, April 9\, 2018\n7:00 pm – 8:30 pm\nColorado Christian University\nLeprino Hall 170\n8787 W.
