SUMMARY:The Witness of the Church and the Technology of God
DESCRIPTION:Tertullian once asked\, “What has Athens to do with Jerusalem?” Today we might ask the same question of Silicon Valley. Many in the Church view technological innovation at best as a secular matter\, or at worst as a threat to family and congregational life. But in a broader view\, the spread of the Gospel has always ridden the tides of technological change. What might a theology of technology look like? And how might the Church today adopt and adapt new and emerging technologies in ways that advance the kingdom of God? \nThe Witness of the Church and the Technology of God\nMonday\, December 9\, 2019\n7:00 pm – 8:30 pm\nColorado Christian University\nLeprino Hall 170\n8787 W. Alameda Ave. Lakewood\, CO 80226 \nAbout Timothy Dalrymple: \nTimothy Dalrymple is the President and CEO of Christianity Today Magazine and ChristianityToday.com. Founded by Billy Graham\, Christianity Today has been called\, “evangelicalism’s flagship magazine.” \nAfter graduating from Stanford with a double major in philosophy and religious studies\, Tim earned an MDiv at Princeton Theological Seminary and a PhD in modern Western religious thought at Harvard University. Along the way\, he also served in youth ministry\, prison chaplaincy\, and graduate and faculty ministry with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. \nTim’s desire to thoughtfully engage the public square and to find creative ways of sharing the gospel in the new media marketplace found expression after Harvard in his work with the multi-religious website Patheos (2008–2014). First\, he was managing editor of Patheos’s evangelical channel\, then director of content and vice-president of business development. \nIn 2013 Dalrymple founded Polymath\, a creative agency that helps clients with branding\, design\, web\, video\, marketing and communications\, and content development. Its clients have included the Museum of the Bible\, International Justice Mission\, the American Enterprise Institute\, and Indiana Wesleyan University. \n \nOnline Form – DL – Timothy Dalrymple – 12.9.19 \nPowered by Formstack

SUMMARY:In Search of Ancient Roots
DESCRIPTION:Protestant evangelicalism is in crisis. Today it is increasingly difficult for Protestants to identify what counts as distinctively Protestant\, much less what counts as evangelical. As evangelicals increasingly lose contact with the churches and traditions descending from the Reformation\, and as relations with Roman Catholicism continue to thaw\, it becomes harder to explain why one should remain committed to the Reformation in the face of perceived deficits and theological challenges with the Protestant tradition. A common complaint about Protestant evangelicalism is its apparent disconnect from ancient Christianity. The antiquity and catholicity of Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy seem to outshine the relative novelty of the Reformation. Some evangelical churches appear to be uninterested in the ancient historical roots of their faith as well as being liturgically and doctrinally unstable. Many within evangelicalism seem to have accepted at face value the suggestion that the evangelical faith is no more than a threadbare descendant of ancient Christianity. The result is that a number of younger Protestants in recent years have abandoned evangelicalism\, turning instead to practices and traditions that appear more rooted in the early church. In Search of Ancient Roots examines this phenomenon and places it within a wider historical context. Ken Stewart argues that the evangelical tradition in fact has a much healthier track record of interacting with Christian antiquity than it is usually given credit for. He surveys five centuries of Protestant engagement with the ancient church. \nMonday\, November 18\, 2019\n7:00pm – 8:30pm MT\nColorado Christian University\nAnschutz Student Center Great Room\n8787 W. Alameda Ave. Lakewood\, CO 80226 \nAbout Dr. Ken Stewart \nDr. Ken Stewart is a specialist in the history of Christianity from the Reformation to the present with special interest in the development of the evangelical Protestant tradition. He has a growing interest in early Christianity and the transmission of doctrine from the early church forward to our time. He also teaches early modern European history and the two-semester Christian Doctrine sequence required for sophomores. Dr. Stewart has been a Professor of Theological Studies at Covenant College\, and on their faculty since 1997. \nOnline Form – DL – K. Stewart – 11.18.19 \nPowered by Formstack

SUMMARY:Crucible of Faith
DESCRIPTION:One of America’s foremost scholars of religion examines the tumultuous era that gave birth to the modern Judeo-Christian tradition. In Crucible of Faith\, Philip Jenkins argues that much of the Judeo-Christian tradition we know today was born between 250-50 BCE\, during a turbulent “Crucible Era.” It was during these years that Judaism grappled with Hellenizing forces and produced new religious ideas that reflected and responded to their changing world. By the time of the fall of the Temple in 70 CE\, concepts that might once have seemed bizarre became normalized-and thus passed on to Christianity and later Islam. Drawing widely on contemporary sources from outside the canonical Old and New Testaments\, Jenkins reveals an era of political violence and social upheaval that ultimately gave birth to entirely new ideas about religion\, the afterlife\, Creation and the Fall\, and the nature of God and Satan. \nMonday\, October 14\, 2019\n7:00pm – 8:30pm MT\nColorado Christian University\nAnschutz Student Center Great Room\n8787 W. Alameda Ave.\, Lakewood\, CO 80226 \n \n \nAbout Dr. Philip Jenkins\nPhilip Jenkins is a Distinguished Professor of History at Baylor University. His many books include The Next Christendom (2002) and The Lost History of Christianity (2008). His most recent title is Crucible of Faith: The Ancient Revolution That Made Our Modern Religious World (Basic Books\, 2017). \nOnline Form – DL – P. Jenkins – 10.14.19 \nPowered by Formstack

SUMMARY:Conserving Western Civilization
DESCRIPTION:Over the last 30 years\, western civilization has become synonymous\, in many quarters\, with racism\, sexism\, darkness\, and oppression. In this talk\, Dr. Bradley Birzer takes down these myths\, noting that the West has traditionally embraced human dignity through voluntary sacrifice. He traces the West from the first philosopher\, Heraclitus\, to the American founding. \nMonday\, September 9\, 2019\n7:00pm – 8:30pm MT\nColorado Christian University\nLeprino Hall 170\n8787 W. SUMMARY:America’s Marriage Divide: Why Marriage is Flourishing among the Upper Middle Class and Floundering among Everybody Else
DESCRIPTION:When it comes to family life\, men\, women\, and children in educated and affluent communities are thriving: they enjoy strong and stable families\, low rates of divorce and nonmarital childbearing\, and comparatively high rates of marital quality. By contrast\, working-class and poor families are floundering: divorce is high\, single parenthood is common\, and marital quality is comparatively low. This talk by U.Va. Professor Bradford Wilcox explains why there is a marriage divide in America\, and why it matters that so many children\, men\, and women in poor and working-class communities don’t have access to “The Marital Privilege.” \nTuesday\, April 9\, 2019\n7:00 PM – 8:30 PM MT\nColorado Christian University\n8787 W. Alameda Ave. Lakewood\, CO 80226\nLeprino Hall 170 \nAbout Dr. Brad Wilcox\nDr. Wilcox is Professor of Sociology at the University of Virginia and a member of the James Madison Society at Princeton University. As an undergraduate\, he was a Jefferson Scholar at U.Va. His research focuses on marriage\, and on the ways that gender\, religion\, class\, and children influence the quality and stability of American family life. He has published articles on marriage\, cohabitation\, fatherhood\, and religion and family life in The American Sociological Review\, Social Forces\, The Journal of Marriage and Family\, and The Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion. His research has been featured in The New York Times\, The Wall Street Journal\, USA Today\, The Washington Post\, Time\, CNN\, NBC’s The Today Show\, and numerous NPR stations. \nOnline Form – DL – B. He argues that what divides America is not race or party but economic class and virtue. \nMurray will be speaking about his book Coming Apart\, what fellow scholar Brad Wilcox called a “sobering portrait of a nation where millions of people are losing touch with the founding virtues that have long lent American lives purpose\, direction and happiness.” \nCome and hear how American culture has evolved even further in the past decade\, and what needs to be done to address our root problems. \n \nMonday\, February 11\, 2019\n7:00 PM – 8:30 PM\nColorado Christian University\nLeprino Hall 170\n8787 W. Alameda Ave.\nLakewood\, CO 80226 \n\nDr. Charles Murray \nCharles Murray is the F.A. Hayek Emeritus Chair in Cultural Studies at the American Enterprise Institute. A political scientist\, author\, and libertarian\, he first came to national attention in 1984 with the publication of “Losing Ground\,” which has been credited as the intellectual foundation for the Welfare Reform Act of 1996. His 1994 New York Times bestseller “The Bell Curve” (Free Press\, 1994)\, coauthored with the late Richard J. Herrnstein\, sparked heated controversy for its analysis of the role of IQ in shaping America’s class structure. Dr. Murray’s other books include “What It Means to Be a Libertarian” (1997)\, “Human Accomplishment” (2003)\, “In Our Hands” (2006)\, “Real Education” (2008)\, and the New York Times bestseller “Coming Apart” (2012). His most recent book\, “By the People: Rebuilding Liberty Without Permission” (Crown Forum\, 2015) urges Americans to stem governmental overreach and use America’s unique civil society to put government back in its place. \nDr. Murray has Ph.D. in political science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a B.A. in history from Harvard University. \nOnline Form – CCU – C Murray – Feb 11 \nPowered by Formstack

SUMMARY:Challenges with Government-Run Education
DESCRIPTION:Government-run education in Colorado is facing serious challenges. A record number of Colorado families are choosing homeschool or charter schools. According to U.S. News and World Report\, four out of the top five performing high schools in Colorado are charter schools. Senator Ben Sasse criticized government-run education as an effort to “homogenize” our kids. Faith leader James Dobson said\, “Today\, public schools don’t offer much in the way of values education\, and if they do\, it’s often wrong.” Some even believe what goes on in public schools can be harmful to a student’s development and learning. \nStill\, a vast majority of Coloradans choose government-run education for their children. How does Colorado improve education? What are the hurdles and challenges facing policymakers\, educators\, and parents? Should Colorado take steps to embrace vouchers and provide religious school choice for parents? How do we achieve the best education for Coloradans? \nJoin the Centennial Institute at Colorado Christian University for this important conversation on the challenges facing government-run education. \nJanuary 14\, 2019\n7:00 PM – 8:30 PM\nColorado Christian University\nLeprino Hall 170\n8787 W. Alameda Ave.\nLakewood\, CO 80226 \nSpeakers:\nDr. Deb Scheffel is the Dean of Dean of the School of Education at Colorado Christian University. She also represents District 4 on the Colorado State Board of Education. \nMike Rosen is a radio personality\, political commentator\, and author. He was the host of The Mike Rosen Show on talk radio station 850 KOA in Denver\, Colorado. \nDerec Shuler is the Executive Director of Ascent Classical Academies\, a classical charter school program with schools in Jefferson and Douglas Counties. \nLaura Boggs is a former member of the Jefferson County Board of Education. \nOnline Form – CI – DL – Education – Jan 14 \nPowered by Formstack

SUMMARY:Early Childhood Care and Education Policy Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Should America expand paid maternity leave? How do you balance the needs of parents\, children\, and small business owners? Should the state of Colorado provide free preschool and kindergarten? Are there free-market-based policies that can serve parents\, children\, and business owners? What are other options to support early childhood education? What’s working for parents and children and what’s broken now? \nEvery day\, millions of working parents struggle with keeping careers on track while raising children\, and finding balance between child rearing and building a career is exceptionally hard. The first 1\,000 days of a child’s life\, in particular\, set the foundation upon which all future development and learning takes place. Employers and our wider society benefit when children get the right start and thrive\, and society and employers win when working parents are productive. Although both beneficiaries can do far more to ensure working parents are equipped to nurture their children and advance their careers\, state and federal policies have not been responsive or supportive of this fundamental social issue. If work is truly the path toward economic security and upward mobility\, public and workplace policies that allow parents to succeed in the workforce\, and do right by their children\, are vital to the future success of our country. \nThe focus of the Early Childhood Care & Education Policy Distinguished Lecture will be to illuminate market-based policies that strike a healthy balance between family wellbeing and a prosperous economy. The featured speakers will include national policy experts\, Katharine Stevens\, who leads the early-childhood program at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI)\, and Nadine Maenza\, the founding Executive Director of Patriot Voices\, where she leads the organization’s special emphasis on public policies that help working families. The panelists will also include State Senator-Elect Brittany Pettersen and State Representative Alec Garnett\, who will provide perspective on early childhood education policies in our state. Gloria Higgins\, the President of Executives Partnering to Invest in Children (EPIC) will serve as the panel moderator\, and will shed light on the employer’s perspective. \nMonday\, December 10\, 2018\n7:00pm – 8:30pm\nColorado Christian University\nLeprino Hall 170\n8787 W. SUMMARY:When Harry Became Sally: Responding to the Transgender Moment
DESCRIPTION:The transgender movement has hit breakneck speed. In the space of a year\, it’s gone from something that most Americans had never heard of to a cause claiming the mantle of civil rights. \nBut can a boy truly be “trapped” in a girl’s body? Can modern medicine really “reassign” sex? Is sex something “assigned” in the first place? What’s the loving response to a friend or child experiencing a gender-identity conflict? What should our law say on these issues? \nDr. Ryan T. Anderson will provide thoughtful answers to these questions and more as he presents his latest book\, When Harry Became Sally: Responding to the Transgender Moment. Drawing on the best insights from biology\, psychology\, and philosophy\, Ryan T. Anderson offers a balanced approach to the policy issues\, a nuanced vision of human embodiment\, and a sober and honest survey of the human costs of getting human nature wrong. \nHe reveals a grim contrast between the media’s sunny depiction and the often sad realities of gender-identity struggles. He introduces listeners to people who tried to “transition” but found themselves no better off. Especially troubling is the suffering felt by adults who were encouraged to transition as children but later came to regret it. \nAnd there is a reason that many do regret it. As Anderson shows\, the most helpful therapies focus not on achieving the impossible—changing bodies to conform to thoughts and feelings—but on helping people accept and even embrace the truth about their bodies and reality. This discussion will be of particular interest to parents who fear how an ideological school counselor might try to steer their child. The best evidence shows that the vast majority of children naturally grow out of any gender-conflicted phase. But no one knows how new school policies might affect children indoctrinated to believe that they really are trapped in the “wrong” body. \nThroughout his new book\, Anderson highlights the various contradictions at the heart of this moment: How it embraces the gnostic idea that the real self is something other than the body\, while also embracing the idea that nothing but the physical exists. How it relies on rigid sex stereotypes—in which dolls are for girls and trucks are for boys—while also insisting that gender is purely a social construct\, and that there are no meaningful differences between women and men. How it assumes that feelings of identity deserve absolute respect\, while the facts of our embodiment do not. How it preaches that people should be free to do as they please and define their own truth—while enforcing a ruthless campaign to coerce anyone who dares to dissent. \nEveryone has something at stake in today’s debates about gender identity. Analyzing education and employment policies\, Obama-era bathroom and locker-room mandates\, politically correct speech codes and religious-freedom violations\, Anderson shows how the law is being used to coerce and penalize those who believe the truth about human nature. And he shows how Americans can begin to push back with principle and prudence\, compassion and grace. \nMonday\, April 9\, 2018\n7:00 pm – 8:30 pm\nColorado Christian University\nLeprino Hall 170\n8787 W. SUMMARY:The End of Religious Freedom? Challenges from the Right\, the Left\, and Around the Globe
DESCRIPTION:Religious liberty is in peril around the globe. The U.S. in particular and the West in general must continue to press the case for this freedom. Rather than make us complacent about our own good fortune\, the frightening international scene must make us vigilant to defend what we have. Unfortunately\, the principle of religious freedom–and in some ways the entire notion of human rights–is under unprecedented assault even in the West. Forces on the right challenge the (classical) liberal project altogether\, and forces on the left water it down to incoherence. Therefore\, we must discover\, or rediscover\, a firm foundation for religious freedom so that we can rescue it at home and promote it in the world. In part\, this entails developing Christian ideas and a Christian culture that stand between secularism and theocracy. \nPlease join us to hear from Dr. Daniel Mark\, Chairman of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom for an update on the state of religious freedom in America and around the world\, as well as ideas on how we can protect this important human right.\n\nMonday\, January 29\, 2018\n7:00pm – 8:30pm\nColorado Christian University\nLeprino Hall 170\n8787 W. Alameda Ave. Lakewood CO 80226 \nOnline Form – CI – DLC – January 29 – Mark \nHTML Form Generator\n \nAbout Dr. Daniel Mark\, Chairman of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom \nDaniel Mark is an assistant professor of political science at Villanova University\, where he has taught since 2013. SUMMARY:Race Relations in America
DESCRIPTION:According to Gallup\, race relations are far lower today than they were in the early 2000s. In fact\, race relations hit an all-time low in 2015. How do we understand what is happening to race relations in America? How do we navigate these complexities and remain united as Americans? How does the public square engage with the messages from groups like Black Lives Matter and the Alt-Right? \nDr. Carol Swain\, author of the books: The New White Nationalism in America\, Race Versus Class\, and Black Faces\, Black Interests\, will help explore these important issues. \nA black conservative\, Dr. Swain has been unfairly smeared by the liberal Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) as an “apologist for white supremacists.” \nFrom high school dropout and teenage mother to highly accomplished university professor and public intellectual\, Dr. Carol M. Swain is passionate about empowering others to confidently raise their voices in the public square. Dr. Swain’s education and experiences make her a credible and powerful force for change in today’s social and political climate where conservatives are intimidated to champion an often-unpopular message. \nMonday\, December 4\, 2017\n7:00pm – 8:30pm\nColorado Christian University\nLeprino Hall 170\n180 S. SUMMARY:Religious Freedom Rally for Jack Phillips
DESCRIPTION:When Colorado cake artist Jack Phillips opened his cakeshop 24 years ago\, he wanted to do more than just provide for his family and his employees. He wanted to serve his community\, share his artistic talents\, and honor God through his work every day. \nHe even named his business Masterpiece Cakeshop. The name was inspired at least in part by his favorite Bible verse\, Ephesians 2:10\, which says\, “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus\, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago.” \nAs Jack says\, “We don’t want God to be part of our lives on just Sundays. We want Him to be part of our lives every day.” \nThat’s why Jack was shocked when not just his business\, but his faith became the subject of vicious attacks and threats of government punishment when his conscience would not allow him to design a custom cake for a same-sex wedding. \nThe government should not force anyone to create art that conflicts with their conscience. Yet that is exactly what the government did to Jack. And if the government has the power to tell you what to believe on the subject of marriage\, it has that same power over all issues. \nThat’s un-American. And terrifying. \nJack’s case will be argued before the U.S. Supreme Court in early December. Join Jack Phillips\, Colorado Christian University\, Alliance Defending Freedom\, and faith leaders from around Colorado for a rally in support of religious freedom on November 8\, 2017 at 10:00am at the Colorado Christian University Event Center. \nLet’s send a message to Washington\, D.C. that religious freedom needs to be protected! \nReligious Freedom Rally for Jack Phillips\nWednesday\, November 8\, 2017\n10:00am-12:00pm MT\nColorado Christian University\nEvent Center\n8787 W. SUMMARY:The Closing of the Liberal Mind: How Groupthink and Intolerance Define the Left
DESCRIPTION:Colorado Christian University is hosting Dr. Kim Holmes on campus for the September President’s Lecture Series. Dr. Holmes will speak on his recent book\, The Closing of the Liberal Mind: How Groupthink and Intolerance Define the Left. \nIn his book\, Holmes surveys the state of liberalism in America today and finds that it is becoming its opposite — abandoning the precepts of open-mindedness and respect for individual rights\, liberties\, and the rule of law upon which the country was founded\, and becoming instead an intolerant\, rigidly dogmatic ideology that abhors dissent and stifles free speech. \nThis event is open to the public and is in partnership with the Centennial Institute’s Distinguished Lecture Series. \n<a href=”https://www.formstack.com/forms/?2805574-Ls5mHs3gx1″ title=”Online Form”>Online Form – CI – DLC – September 17 – Holmes</a> \nHTML Form Generator\n \nAbout Dr. Kim Holmes: \nDr. Holmes is an author and American Diplomat. Holmes is a former U.S. assistant secretary of state and former vice president for research at The Heritage Foundation. Recognized around the globe as one of Washington’s foremost foreign and defense policy experts\, Holmes is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations\, where he formerly served on the Washington Advisory Committee. As a historian of U.S. political movements and ideology\, Holmes writes about America’s place in the world and the changing political landscape. \nHis latest book\, The Closing of the Liberal Mind (Encounter\, April 2016)\, reveals how liberals in America are turning their backs on their traditions and have become a force for “illiberalism”— namely\, denying their fellow Americans’ rights and freedoms. \nOther published works include Rebound: Getting America Back to Great (2013) and Liberty’s Best Hope: American Leadership for the 21st Century (2008). He has an M.A. and a Ph.D. in history from Georgetown University with a focus on European and American history. He is a founding editor of the annual Heritage/Wall Street Journal Index of Economic Freedom.
