SUMMARY:Distinguished Lecture Series: Ethics of COVID-19 Vaccines
DESCRIPTION:The COVID-19 vaccine has raised ethical questions. During our January Distinguished Lecture Series\, Dr. Ryan Anderson\, founder and editor in chief of Public Discourse\, explores many of these questions. Is COVID-19 vaccine developed from cell lines derived from an aborted fetus? If so\, should a citizen of conscience who is opposed to abortion avail herself of it to protect herself and her loved ones during this time of pandemic? What are other ethical implications around vaccines? Should governments make vaccinations mandatory? Could businesses refuse service without a vaccine “passport?” Colorado has mandated that a 22-year-old\, healthy\, “frontline journalist” receive the vaccines before a 64-year-old with lung problems. DESCRIPTION:What does Trump’s Presidency Portend for the Future of Conservatism in America? \nPresident Trump really upset the status quo in D.C. If court challenges go his way\, he will continue to do so for another 4 years\, but even if not\, his presidency has had a profound impact on America. First\, the restoration of constitutionalism in the courts\, where the words of the Constitution actually bind the branches of government rather than serving as so much putty to be molded for current\, avant-garde agendas. Second\, a serious (though not yet remotely successful) pushback against an unelected and unaccountable administrative state\, with the hope of restoring policy-making power to the elected legislative branch (and\, ultimately\, to the people). Third\, a restoration of a foreign policy that pursues America’s interests in the world rather than\, as had increasingly become the case\, some nebulous (or even nefarious) globalism. Those are advances that every constitutional conservative should welcome\, and should continue to work to advance. \nOne negative\, though\, and that is the disinclination of Trump to tackle the ever-expanding federal budget. The deficit itself is obscene\, but the accumulated debt is now taking on proportions so large as to likely enslave future generations of Americans. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Ray Mitsch will speak on “Surviving – or Thriving – during a Global Pandemic.” \nThe President’s Lecture Series exists to expose students to great authors\, speakers\, theologians\, philosophers\, statesmen\, historians\, and others\, in an effort to provide students with an excellent education in strategic disciplines and Western civilization. \nMonday\, October 12\, 2020 \n7:00 pm – 8:30 pm MT \n \n\nDr. Ray Mitsch is a Professor of Psychology at Colorado Christian University. Dr. Mitsch received his master’s degree and doctorate in counseling psychology from Indiana State University. After receiving his doctorate in 1986\, he worked as a staff psychologist at Michigan Technological University. In 1988\, Dr. Mitsch moved with his family to Illinois and began practice at the Minirth-Meier Clinic of Wheaton. \nIn 1993\, he started his own counseling practice called Cornerstone Counseling Center and was in private practice until his departure to Promise Keepers in Colorado. He has had extensive experience in men’s ministry\, and caring ministries within the local church. He was an adjunct staff member at Christ Community Church of St. Charles\, Illinois\, where he developed Harbor Ministries\, a recovery ministry for hurting and struggling people in the church. \nDr. Mitsch has used his 30 years of experience in working with missionaries from around the world. His work with mission agencies includes WorldVenture and The Evangelical Alliance Mission (TEAM). As a result\, he has had the opportunity to work with over 200 missionary families\, both on the field as well as those on home assignment. \nDr. Mitsch has been a guest speaker on several radio programs\, including the Minirth-Meier Clinic’s (now New Life Clinic) daily radio program. He has also enjoyed numerous speaking engagements at area churches as well as professional organizations and businesses. He has authored five books including his last book entitled\, Nurturing Your Child’s Potential\, and his best-selling book\, Grieving the Loss of Someone You Love\, selling over 300\,000 copies worldwide. He was a charter member of the American Association of Christian Counseling and is a licensed psychologist in Colorado. \nDr. Mitsch currently serves as the Chair for the Department of Psychology and was recently promoted to professor of psychology at CCU. He has been married to Linda for 39 years and they are blessed to have four daughters\, and two grandchildren. The Mitsches live in the Denver area.

As a result\, he has had the opportunity to work with over 200 missionary families\, both on the field as well as those on home assignment. \nDr. Mitsch has been a guest speaker on several radio programs\, including the Minirth-Meier Clinic’s (now New Life Clinic) daily radio program. He has also enjoyed numerous speaking engagements at area churches as well as professional organizations and businesses. He has authored five books including his last book entitled\, Nurturing Your Child’s Potential\, and his best-selling book\, Grieving the Loss of Someone You Love\, selling over 300\,000 copies worldwide. He was a charter member of the American Association of Christian Counseling and is a licensed psychologist in Colorado. \nDr. Mitsch currently serves as the Chair for the Department of Psychology and was recently promoted to professor of psychology at CCU. He has been married to Linda for 39 years and they are blessed to have four daughters\, and two grandchildren. The Mitsches live in the Denver area.

He has always had a passion for teaching and was blessed to join the CCU faculty in 2011 as an associate professor of biology. Most recently\, Dr. Parker has been integral in revamping the curriculum and increasing the enrollment in CCU’s Science program\, developing the new Industrial and Systems Engineering program\, and launching the newly formed School of Science and Engineering. His wife is a cardiovascular registered nurse pursing her nurse practitioner degree. Together they have three sons.

Or centrally plan the economy? Or even impose a welfare state? \nHardly. \nPoint by point\, Reed answers the claims of socialists and progressives who try to enlist Jesus in their causes. As he reveals\, nothing in the New Testament supports their contentions.\nWas Jesus a Socialist? could not be more timely. Socialism has made a shocking comeback in America. Poll after poll shows that young Americans have a positive image of socialism. Whenever one of our two great parties has a setback\, we’ve heard: “This is the end of the Democratic Party\,” or\, “The Republican Party is going out of existence.” Yet both survive\, and thrive. \nWe have the oldest and third oldest political parties in the world—the Democratic Party founded in 1832 to reelect Andrew Jackson\, the Republican Party founded in 1854 to oppose slavery in the territories. They are older than almost every American business\, most American colleges\, and many American churches. Both have seemed to face extinction in the past\, and have rebounded to be competitive again. How have they managed it? \nMichael Barone\, longtime co-author of The Almanac of American Politics\, brings a deep understanding of our electoral history to the question and finds a compelling answer. They will answer questions on the history of coronavirus\, how it spreads\, its impact on the body\, the current medical responses\, and\, most importantly\, how science can defeat it. \n\nWatch on YouTube\n\nAbout Dr. Mark Parker\nDr. Parker trained as a developmental biologist and neuroscientist in preparation for working in academic research\, where he studied the development of the vertebrate nervous system. From there\, he transitioned into the biotech industry where he served as a director of the technical service department\, oversaw both internal production and external production\, and directed a research and development team. He has always had a passion for teaching and was blessed to join the CCU faculty in 2011 as an associate professor of biology. Most recently\, Dr. Parker has been integral in revamping the curriculum and increasing the enrollment in CCU’s Science program\, developing the new Industrial and Systems Engineering program\, and launching the newly formed School of Science and Engineering. His wife is a cardiovascular registered nurse pursing her nurse practitioner degree. Together they have three sons. \n\nAbout Dr. Damon Perez\nDr. Damon S. Perez is an Associate Professor of Biology in CCU’s College of Adult & Graduate Studies.
