SUMMARY:Faith and Freedom Speaker Series: Roger Sherman and the Creation of the American Republic
DESCRIPTION:Join the National Endowment for the Humanities and Centennial Institute for the Faith and Freedom Speaker Series: Christianity and the Spirit of 1776\, featuring Dr. Mark David Hall. \nDespite being the only Founder to help draft the Declaration and Resolves (1774)\, the Articles of Association (1774)\, the Declaration of Independence (1776)\, the Articles of Confederation (1777\, 1778)\, the Constitution (1787)\, and the Bill of Rights (1791)\, Roger Sherman is largely unknown today. Not merely present as these foundational documents were crafted\, Sherman served on the five-man committee that wrote the Declaration of Independence\, was among the most significant delegates to the Constitutional Convention\, and as a Representative and Senator in the new republic he played important roles in the drafting the Bill of Rights and debates over the proper scope of the national government’s power. SUMMARY:Last Lecture Series: Following Jesus - An Unexpected Journey
DESCRIPTION:Join the Centennial Institute for our upcoming Last Lecture event with Dr. Seth Rodriquez\, CCU Associate Professor of Old Testament Studies and Biblical Archaeology. \nJesus called his first disciples with the words\, “Follow me.” Today\, those words echo down the centuries as he beckons each of us to follow. But as the disciples soon discovered\, the journey did not go as they had expected. There were surprising twists and turns\, backtracks\, and dead ends\, but also beautiful views from mountaintops. They suffered injury\, pain\, and loss\, but were also blessed beyond measure. They were sometimes confused along the way\, but were always exactly where the Lord wanted them. That was their story. For more information on how to apply for a media credential\, please email centennial@ccu.edu. \nAbout Dr. Seth Rodriquez \n \nDr. Seth Rodriquez is originally from California\, lived in Kentucky for a decade\, and then spent three years in Utah as part of a church planting team. Before coming to CCU\, he served as an adjunct professor at Anderson University and The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Internationally\, he taught at the Baptist Theological Seminary of Zimbabwe as a guest lecturer in 2016. He currently serves on the board of directors and as the secretary of the Near East Archaeological Society. His work has been published in the CBS Holy Land Illustrated Bible\, The Dictionary of Daily Life in Biblical and Post-Biblical Antiquity\, Mounce’s Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testaments Words\, and Biblical Illustrator magazine. \nRodriquez leads a team of CCU students to excavate in Israel every summer\, leveraging his extensive experience studying and traveling in the land of the Bible. He studied and the Israel Bible Extension (IBEX) campus of The Master’s University in 1996 and 2001\, and at the Jerusalem University College on Mt. Zion in 2001. He worked on the excavation team at Tel Hazor in 2006 and has served as a Square Supervisor at the Tell es-Safi/Gath Excavation Project since 2018. For several years\, he was a research assistant and writer for BiblePlaces.com and LifeintheHolyLand.com. \nHis doctoral work focused on Old Testament archaeology and history\, with a double minor in Hebrew and New Testament History. His dissertation\, “The Arsenal of the Hebrew Kings and Their Neighbors\,” was a detailed study of weapons mentioned in the Bible and used in the ancient Near East during the Iron Age. His master’s thesis evaluated various theories about the location of Solomon’s Temple on the Temple Mount. \nRodriquez and his wife\, Kiersten\, live in Arvada with their five children: Benjamin\, Talia\, Leila\, Channah\, and Judah. They enjoy camping and hiking in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains.

SUMMARY:Issue Monday: Neither Sovereign nor Slave – Remaining Human in the AI Age
DESCRIPTION:Join Centennial Institute and The Institute for Christian Anthropology at the Colson Center for a conversation with Christopher Watkin\, Associate Professor in European Languages at Monash University. \nArtificial intelligence promises to place extraordinary powers at our fingertips. It writes\, advises\, creates\, organizes and responds to our commands\, offering each of us something like the privileges of a sovereign. Yet the technologies that appear to serve us can also train our desires\, flatter our assumptions\, deepen our dependencies and quietly reshape what we understand a human being to be. The would-be sovereign risks becoming a slave. \nDrawing on Scripture and Christian wisdom\, Christopher Watkin explores how AI intensifies the characteristically modern predicament of the sovereign slave\, and why the Christian vision of humanity offers a richer alternative. Human beings are neither autonomous masters of their world nor obsolete machines waiting to be surpassed. We are creatures made in the image of God\, endowed with a dignity we receive rather than manufacture or earn.
