Many of those transforming moments occurred as a result of staff and faculty investment in and outside of the classroom. Realizing the roles they had in his life served as an impetus to teach traditional undergraduate students. As a result\, not only does Dr. Jones have the opportunity to teach\, engage\, and learn alongside these students\, but he also has the chance to mentor multiple students through intentional relationships for the sake of Christ. \nJones completed his Ph.D. by examining the humanity of Jesus in Matthew and serves with Summit Ministries as a co-host for the Upside-Down Parenting podcast and faculty-in-residence. When not serving students\, teaching\, or engaging in community and church activities\, he enjoys spending time with his amazing wife\, Cathy\, and his young adult children\, Hannah\, Tyler\, and Mackenzie. His academic achievements continue to be shaped by his experiences. Dr. Shumaker was the dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. He has also constructed and directed a unique honors program called the “Honors Core\,” which blended academics\, leadership\, and ministry services. He led faculty Great Books discussion with the undergraduate college faculty\, and he constructed and continued to direct a unique Christian Great Books M.A.\, centering on the comparison and contrast between various worldviews as articulated in the Bible and various Great Books of the Western world. Dr. Shumaker currently serves as Professor of Politics within the College of Undergraduate Studies’ School of Humanities and Social Sciences.

She earned a PhD in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Northwestern University\, Evanston\, Illinois\, and completed a National Institutes of Mental Health post-doctoral fellowship in cognitive science at the University of California\, San Diego. She previously served as a visiting scholar at the United States Air Force Academy\, in the role of Dean at two secular universities\, worked at the Colorado Department of Education in various roles\, including Assistant to the Commissioner of Education in literacy\, and has worked in six states in various professional positions related to education.  She served two 6-year terms plus a vacancy\, as an elected member of the Colorado State Board of Education representing Colorado’s 6th and 4th Congressional Districts\, concluding her service in January\, 2025. Her professional affiliations include the International Neuropsychological Society\, where she serves on the budget committee\, the International Dyslexia Association\, the Council for Exceptional Children\, and Advance Colorado\, where she serves as a fellow. She is a consultant in school reform efforts in various states and her research interests are in education reform policy\, reading\, and oral language development and disabilities in children.

DESCRIPTION:Join Centennial Institute for a conversation with Dr. Andre Archie\, associate professor of ancient Greek philosophy at Colorado State University\, on how the classical tradition might help defeat identity politics. \nDr. Archie’s approach to race relations – the color-blind approach – is grounded on the moral belief that the mere possession of hereditary qualities\, like race\, should not confer moral merit by their possession or nonpossession. Instead\, moral merit can be\, and should be\, conferred upon an individual’s actions\, because actions reveal one’s character. He specializes in the History of Ancient Greek Philosophy and Ancient Greek Political Philosophy. His latest research focuses on methodological issues in Plato and Aristotle. Andre has published in various academic journals such as the Journal of Philosophical Research\, Ancient Philosophy\, History of Political Thought\, and Scholia. He is the author of Politics in Socrates’ Alcibiades: A Philosophical Account of Plato’s Dialogue Alcibiades Major (Springer 2015). \nAndre’s scholarship also highlights the value of Classical Studies and how it can provide a much-needed perspective on topical issues that often get discussed glibly by today’s educators. Such issues are identity politics\, race\, family\, and culture. Andre’s engagement with classical antiquity wholeheartedly affirms its positive and civilizing values. At the appellate level\, Julian has developed winning strategies on a range of issues\, including federal and state constitutional law\, administrative law\, federal jurisdiction\, tax\, torts\, products liability\, employment\, and statutory interpretation. He is counsel of record in appeals before federal and state courts across the country\, including the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit\, Colorado Supreme Court\, and Colorado Court of Appeals. Julian also has a robust amicus practice and regularly files amicus briefs in the U.S. Supreme Court and federal circuit courts. At the trial level\, Julian serves as lead strategist in complex federal and state litigation matters. He has advised clients on matters related to breach of contract\, municipality law\, constitutional law\, campaign finance\, federal permitting\, the Endangered Species Act\, federal maritime law\, and water rights\, among others. Julian often parachutes into existing litigation to handle novel\, first-impression issues before the trial court in anticipation of appeal.  Julian also has experience trying cases. He has prosecuted a breach-of-contract action through trial on behalf of a Colorado company\, securing the enforcement of an unsigned agreement and an award of full damages and attorney’s fees and costs. He has defended a multimillion-dollar arbitration in Florida that resulted in zero liability for his client. And he has prosecuted an oil and gas arbitration\, which resulted in a multimillion-dollar award that was 15 times more than the last settlement offer. When Julian is not practicing law\, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two young sons on their Elbert County ranch. Julian is an aspiring working cow horse competitor and accomplished DIY hunter. \n  \n \nDan Snowberger was appointed unanimously by the Board of Education as Superintendent of Elizabeth School District on March 13\, 2023. Dan has 39 years of experience in public education including that of a paraprofessional\, a teacher\, assistant principal\, principal\, director\, assistant superintendent\, and superintendent. In the middle of his career\, he worked for a private non-profit to support charter schools across the country in developing strong curricular programs in between his roles in public schools in Florida and Colorado. Prior to becoming superintendent in Elizabeth\, Dan served as Superintendent of Schools in Durango\, CO\, Zone Superintendent in El Paso County 49\, and Assistant Superintendent in the Harrison School District. Dan is especially proud of his efforts to refocus the public-school districts on their main mission – educating students and ensuring parents retain their rights to make important decisions for their children. He is especially proud of the bold stands his Board has taken with the support of the Elizabeth community\, despite the challenging legislation that continues to emerge from the legislature. \n  \nLathan Watts serves as Vice President of Public Affairs for Alliance Defending Freedom. After graduating summa cum laude from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School\, he was invited to join a church-planting team for CrossWay Community Church and served as the pastor of discipleship for seven years. Dr. Kotter’s primary research is focused on the areas of intersection between theology and economics. He has been invited to lecture on related topics around the United States as well as Asia and Europe. Dr. Kotter has contributed to three books along with numerous journal articles and book reviews. He is also active in biblical archaeology and has organized three summer expeditions for CCU students to dig at Tel es-Safi (Gath) in southwestern Israel. Dr. Kotter co-founded and serves as the research director for the Commonweal Project on Faith\, Work and Human Flourishing to train future pastors in the principles of economics and finance. He also writes as a senior research fellow for the Institute for Faith\, Work and Economics.

Pence\, 48th Vice President of the United States\, was born in Columbus\, Indiana on June 7\, 1959\, as one of six children born to Edward and Nancy Pence. As a young boy\, he had a front-row seat to the American Dream. The family ran a successful convenience store business in their small Indiana town. Experiencing this nurtured the future Vice President’s belief in the importance of hard work\, faith\, and family. \nPence earned his bachelor’s degree in history from Hanover College in 1981. While there\, he embraced his Christian faith which remains the driving force in his life. He later attended Indiana University School of Law and met the love of his life\, Karen. After graduating\, Pence practiced law\, led the Indiana Policy Review Foundation\, and began hosting The Mike Pence Show\, a syndicated talk radio show and a weekly television public affairs program in Indiana. \nGrowing up in Indiana\, surrounded by good\, hardworking Hoosiers\, Pence always knew that he needed to give back to the state and the country that had given him so much. In 2000\, he launched a successful bid for his local congressional seat\, entering the United States House of Representatives at the age of 41. The people of east-central Indiana elected Pence six times to represent them in Congress. \nIn 2013\, Pence left the nation’s capital when Hoosiers elected him the 50th Governor of Indiana. He brought his limited government and low-tax philosophy to the Indiana Statehouse. As Governor\, he enacted the largest income tax cut in Indiana history\, lowering individual income tax rates\, the business personal property tax\, and the corporate income tax in order to strengthen the State’s competitive edge and attract new investment and good-paying jobs. \nIt was Indiana’s success story\, Pence’s record of legislative and executive experience\, and his strong family values that prompted his selection as the vice presidential nominee in July 2016. After being elected in November 2016\, he entered office on January 20\, 2017. \nAbout Former Second Lady Karen Pence \n \nKaren Pence\, wife of Vice President Mike Pence\, is a mother\, educator\, and award-winning watercolor artist. Mrs. Pence works to bring attention to art therapy and to the sacrifices made by military service members and their families. \nMrs. Pence dedicated 30 years in the classroom as an elementary school teacher before becoming the First Lady of Indiana in 2013. In her role as First Lady of Indiana\, Mrs. Pence created the Indiana First Lady’s Charitable Foundation\, a 501 (c)3\, established with the purpose to encourage and support youth and families of Indiana. The Foundation’s board awarded over $600\,000 in grants to charities throughout Indiana in three years. \nAs Second Lady of the United States\, Mrs. Pence was committed to raising awareness and educating the public about the mental health profession of art therapy in the United States and around the world. She observed art therapy programs in the Asia Pacific region\, Australia\, Europe\, South America\, Africa\, Canada\, and across the United States. \nIn October 2017\, Mrs. Pence launched her art therapy initiative\, Healing with the HeART. She wants to elevate the profession so that people understand that art therapy is a mental health profession\, not arts and crafts. The former Second Lady also wants to help people understand that art therapy is an option for various conditions\, illnesses\, and life experiences; and to encourage young people to go into the profession. \nMrs. Pence also serves as an encourager to military service members\, spouses\, and their families. She has hosted and participated in numerous events to honor and recognize all of those in the Armed Forces. In September 2018\, Mrs. Pence launched an awareness campaign to elevate and encourage our nation’s military spouses. As part of the campaign\, Mrs. Pence educates military spouses about the available resources and opportunities to support spouses and their families. In August 2019\, the American Legion Auxiliary awarded Mrs. Pence the Public Spirit Award for her contributions that positively impact communities through service to our military\, veterans\, and their families.

Alameda Ave.\nLakewood\, CO 80226 \nRegister below to attend in-person. \nSpeakers\n \nDean of Behavioral and Social Sciences\, Dr. David Murphy joined the CCU team in 2021\, after retiring in 2014 after 25 years of Air Force (AF) service and then completing his Ph.D. in Leadership Philosophy from Dallas Baptist University in 2019. \nMurphy hails from Whittier\, California. He received his commission and bachelor of science from the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) in 1990. After earning his pilot wings at Sheppard Air Force Base (AFB)\, Texas\, he had multiple assignments worldwide flying the F-16. He is a command pilot with over 2\,300 flying hours\, including 274 in combat\, and served as an F-16 flight lead\, instructor pilot\, and flight examiner. \nIn 2003\, Colonel Murphy joined the USAFA Air Officer Commander training program and attended the University of Colorado\, Colorado Springs. After earning a second master’s degree\, he served two years on the USAFA faculty. Murphy then served as the Mission Support Group Deputy Commander at Andrews AFB\, Maryland before attending the U.S. Army War College (USAWC) in 2012. At the USAWC\, he was Seminar Chair of the Advanced Strategic Arts Program. He concluded his career as the 782nd Training Group Commander at Sheppard AFB with oversight of the AF’s most diverse training and educational group. \n  \n \nDr. Tom Copeland serves as Director of Research\, coordinating and advancing the research objectives of the Centennial Institute. He writes and edits op-eds\, articles\, and white papers\, in coordination with our Policy Fellows and Faculty Fellows\, and provides testimony on legislation in Colorado. \nDr. Copeland was previously professor at CCU\, teaching a wide range of courses in public policy\, national security\, international relations\, terrorism\, and American government. Dr. Copeland formerly served as Chief of Staff in the Government Services Division of LexisNexis\, working with the FBI\, DEA\, INS\, SEC\, DOJ\, and TSA. He was Director of Admissions at The Institute of World Politics\, and spent three summers at the Office of Naval Research. \nDr. Copeland previously taught at Biola University and at Geneva College.
