For more information on how to apply for a media credential\, please email centennial@ccu.edu. \nAbout Dr. David Kotter \n \nDr. David Kotter serves as the dean of the School of Theology\, but began his career at Ford Motor Company as a financial analyst at its world headquarters and eventually as a plant controller at a manufacturing plant in Spain. After graduating summa cum laude from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School\, he was invited to join a church-planting team for CrossWay Community Church and served as the pastor of discipleship for seven years. Dr. Kotter’s primary research is focused on the areas of intersection between theology and economics. He has been invited to lecture on related topics around the United States as well as Asia and Europe. Dr. Kotter has contributed to three books along with numerous journal articles and book reviews. He is also active in biblical archaeology and has organized three summer expeditions for CCU students to dig at Tel es-Safi (Gath) in southwestern Israel. Dr. Kotter co-founded and serves as the research director for the Commonweal Project on Faith\, Work and Human Flourishing to train future pastors in the principles of economics and finance. He also writes as a senior research fellow for the Institute for Faith\, Work and Economics.

He has extensive experience in mental and emotional health consulting with schools and faith-based organizations. He is the founder of No Student Unseen\, which helps schools navigate their mental health challenges with the Stop Light Alert for Mental and Emotional Wellness system. Clinically\, Dr. Mayfield is an expert in working with families affected by trauma. He is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Mental Health Counseling at CCU and also partners with the AACC as the Director of Practice and Ministry Development and Editor of Marriage & Family: A Christian Journal. \nDr. Mayfield is the author of four books\, “HELP! My Teen is Self-Injuring: A Crisis Manual for Parents” which addresses his own suicide survival story\, and provides practical tools to help your child who may be struggling\, “The Path Out of Loneliness: Finding and Fostering Connection to God\, Ourselves and One Another”\, “The Path To Wholeness: Managing Emotions\, Finding Healing\, and Becoming Our Best Selves” and “Hope and Healing for Loneliness: A Guide to Flourish in Community”. \nCurrently\, Dr. Mayfield is in the process of developing a research project that encapsulates the core of his research interests and societal concerns. The project will focus on the assessment of the longitudinal effects of mental and emotional well-being in school-aged children\, spanning from kindergarten through high school. This will be achieved by designing a comprehensive study that will employ an innovative program known as the “Stop Light Alert for Mental and Emotional Well-being.” \nAt the heart of this research project lies the meticulous analysis of pre and posttest data collected from hundreds of schools across the country\, encompassing diverse demographic backgrounds and geographic regions. The primary objective of this research is to evaluate the effectiveness of the preventative program\, with a specific focus on its potential to reduce incidents of suicidal ideation\, attempts\, and violent threats within the school environment.

During his time leading the company\, InsureMe was ranked in the “Top 25 Great Places to Work in America” and was also named the most philanthropic small business in Colorado. Since selling InsureMe in 2008\, Tim has been an investor in several business endeavors. He teaches Personal Financial Planning in the School of Business and Leadership in CCU’s College of Undergraduate Studies\, where he was named affiliate faculty member of the year in 2018\, 2021\, and 2024. He and his wife\, Pam\, have three grown children who have graduated from CCU. They consider it an honor and a privilege to serve and support CCU.

From 2005 to early 2007\, he served as deputy assistant secretary for intelligence and analysis at the U.S. Department of the Treasury. In that capacity\, he served both as a senior official within the department’s terrorism and financial intelligence branch and as deputy chief of the Office of Intelligence and Analysis\, one of sixteen U.S. intelligence agencies coordinated under the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. During his tenure at Treasury\, Dr. Levitt played a central role in efforts to protect the U.S. financial system from abuse and to deny terrorists\, weapons proliferators\, and other rogue actors the ability to finance threats to U.S. national security. In 2008-2009\, he served as a State Department counterterrorism advisor to the special envoy for Middle East regional security (SEMERS)\, General James L. Pence\, 48th Vice President of the United States\, was born in Columbus\, Indiana on June 7\, 1959\, as one of six children born to Edward and Nancy Pence. As a young boy\, he had a front-row seat to the American Dream. The family ran a successful convenience store business in their small Indiana town. Experiencing this nurtured the future Vice President’s belief in the importance of hard work\, faith\, and family. \nPence earned his bachelor’s degree in history from Hanover College in 1981. While there\, he embraced his Christian faith which remains the driving force in his life. He later attended Indiana University School of Law and met the love of his life\, Karen. After graduating\, Pence practiced law\, led the Indiana Policy Review Foundation\, and began hosting The Mike Pence Show\, a syndicated talk radio show and a weekly television public affairs program in Indiana. \nGrowing up in Indiana\, surrounded by good\, hardworking Hoosiers\, Pence always knew that he needed to give back to the state and the country that had given him so much. In 2000\, he launched a successful bid for his local congressional seat\, entering the United States House of Representatives at the age of 41. The people of east-central Indiana elected Pence six times to represent them in Congress. \nIn 2013\, Pence left the nation’s capital when Hoosiers elected him the 50th Governor of Indiana. After being elected in November 2016\, he entered office on January 20\, 2017. \nAbout Former Second Lady Karen Pence \n \nKaren Pence\, wife of Vice President Mike Pence\, is a mother\, educator\, and award-winning watercolor artist. Mrs. Pence works to bring attention to art therapy and to the sacrifices made by military service members and their families. \nMrs. Pence dedicated 30 years in the classroom as an elementary school teacher before becoming the First Lady of Indiana in 2013. In her role as First Lady of Indiana\, Mrs. Pence created the Indiana First Lady’s Charitable Foundation\, a 501 (c)3\, established with the purpose to encourage and support youth and families of Indiana. The Foundation’s board awarded over $600\,000 in grants to charities throughout Indiana in three years. \nAs Second Lady of the United States\, Mrs. Pence was committed to raising awareness and educating the public about the mental health profession of art therapy in the United States and around the world. The former Second Lady also wants to help people understand that art therapy is an option for various conditions\, illnesses\, and life experiences; and to encourage young people to go into the profession. \nMrs. Pence also serves as an encourager to military service members\, spouses\, and their families. She has hosted and participated in numerous events to honor and recognize all of those in the Armed Forces. In September 2018\, Mrs. Pence launched an awareness campaign to elevate and encourage our nation’s military spouses. As part of the campaign\, Mrs. Pence educates military spouses about the available resources and opportunities to support spouses and their families. In August 2019\, the American Legion Auxiliary awarded Mrs. Pence the Public Spirit Award for her contributions that positively impact communities through service to our military\, veterans\, and their families.

Alameda Ave.\nLakewood\, CO 80226 \nRegister below to attend in-person. \nSpeakers\n \nDean of Behavioral and Social Sciences\, Dr. David Murphy joined the CCU team in 2021\, after retiring in 2014 after 25 years of Air Force (AF) service and then completing his Ph.D. in Leadership Philosophy from Dallas Baptist University in 2019. \nMurphy hails from Whittier\, California. He received his commission and bachelor of science from the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) in 1990. After earning his pilot wings at Sheppard Air Force Base (AFB)\, Texas\, he had multiple assignments worldwide flying the F-16. He is a command pilot with over 2\,300 flying hours\, including 274 in combat\, and served as an F-16 flight lead\, instructor pilot\, and flight examiner. \nIn 2003\, Colonel Murphy joined the USAFA Air Officer Commander training program and attended the University of Colorado\, Colorado Springs. After earning a second master’s degree\, he served two years on the USAFA faculty. Murphy then served as the Mission Support Group Deputy Commander at Andrews AFB\, Maryland before attending the U.S. Army War College (USAWC) in 2012. At the USAWC\, he was Seminar Chair of the Advanced Strategic Arts Program. He concluded his career as the 782nd Training Group Commander at Sheppard AFB with oversight of the AF’s most diverse training and educational group. \n  \n \nDr. Tom Copeland serves as Director of Research\, coordinating and advancing the research objectives of the Centennial Institute. He writes and edits op-eds\, articles\, and white papers\, in coordination with our Policy Fellows and Faculty Fellows\, and provides testimony on legislation in Colorado. \nDr. Copeland was previously professor at CCU\, teaching a wide range of courses in public policy\, national security\, international relations\, terrorism\, and American government. Dr. Copeland formerly served as Chief of Staff in the Government Services Division of LexisNexis\, working with the FBI\, DEA\, INS\, SEC\, DOJ\, and TSA. He was Director of Admissions at The Institute of World Politics\, and spent three summers at the Office of Naval Research. \nDr. Copeland previously taught at Biola University and at Geneva College. SUMMARY:Preserving Free Speech: An Evening with Lorie Smith and 303 Creative
DESCRIPTION:Join the Centennial Institute at Colorado Christian University and Alliance Defending Freedom for a conversation with Lorie Smith about recent oral arguments in the Supreme Court case 303 Creative v. Elenis. \nShould the government be able to tell Americans what they can and cannot say? Or should artists be forced to express messages they don’t believe? What happens when public accommodation laws and free speech collide? \nGraphic artist and website designer Lorie Smith has asked the Court to decide whether the state of Colorado can force her to create custom websites that violate her beliefs about marriage. At the heart of the case is whether Colorado can use its public accommodations law—the same law that the state used to target Christian cake artist Jack Philips of Masterpiece Cakeshop—to compel speech and excise beliefs the government dislikes from the public square.  Like Jack\, Lorie serves everyone\, including those who identify as LGBT.  She simply wants the freedom to create custom art and promote messages consistent with her beliefs. In this role\, he leads one of the largest annual gatherings of conservatives in the Western United States and hosts numerous notable speakers on the campus of Colorado Christian University. He oversees the Centennial Institute’s lobbying team\, working to shape policy at the Colorado Capitol to advance faith\, family\, and freedom. Jeff is also the editor of the Centennial Review\, a monthly speech digest distributed to thousands of readers across the country. \nA regular writer\, his pieces have been published in USA Today\, Fox News\, Denver Post\, Colorado Springs Gazette\, Washington Examiner\, Townhall\, Colorado Politics\, and many others. He has appeared on Fox News\, CSPAN\, OANN\, Newsmax\, and many local stations. Jeff earned his BA degrees in Philosophy and Religious Studies from Westmont College\, Master of Divinity from Fuller Theological Seminary\, and Master of Political Management from George Washington University. Jeff is an ultra-runner\, former river guide\, and loves to be outdoors. He and his wife\, Nicole\, have four children and live on a ranch in Elizabeth\, Colorado. \nScott Wasserman \nScott Wasserman has lived in Colorado for over twenty-years and has had a long career in state politics and policy. As President of the Bell Policy Center\, Scott has worked to expand economic mobility for every Coloradan by educating policymakers about the state’s fiscal options\, fighting back against predatory practices\, and advocating for two generation solutions to economic and racial inequality. \nPrior to joining the Bell\, Scott served Governor John Hickenlooper as a Deputy Chief of Staff and\, Lt. Governors Joe Garcia\, and Lt. Governor Donna Lynne as Chief of staff. In these roles\, he wrote legislation creating the Colorado Opportunity Scholarship Initiative\, oversaw government operations in times of emergency\, and assisted state agency leaders forge a more integrated approach to education and workforce issues. Scott spent many years working for the Service Employees International Union in a variety of roles\, eventually becoming president of Colorado WINS\, the state’s state employee union\, and leading the union through the challenges of the Great Recession. He regularly presents to community leaders\, media\, and students on the policy making process. He has a B.A in Middle Eastern Studies from George Washington University\, has taught for many years and works as an adjunct professor at the University of Denver Scrivner School. Scott lives in Denver with his wife\, two children\, and five chickens. He enjoys nature and tinkers with things in the kitchen\, workshop\, or the backyard whenever he can. \nLuige del Puerto \n \nLuige del Puerto\, a veteran political reporter and award-winning journalist\, is Editor of Colorado Politics and The Denver Gazette. He previously served as publisher and editor of Arizona Capitol Times\, a Phoenix-based media company that covers public policy and politics. A native of the Philippines\, Del Puerto cut his journalistic teeth covering crime in the streets of Metro Manila. At the Philippine Daily Inquirer\, he pursued stories about labor\, elections and national security\, covering coup d’état attempts in his home country. He and his wife moved to the United States in 2006. He has won numerous local and national awards in the U.S. for his reporting.
