SUMMARY:Last Lecture Series: From Abel to Eternity: Finding Our Place in God’s Grand Design
DESCRIPTION:Join the Centennial Institute for our upcoming Last Lecture event with Dr. Steve Shumaker\, Professor of Politics at Colorado Christian University. \nWhat do God’s Word\, Great Books\, and political philosophy have to do with each other? More importantly\, what do they have to do with you or me? At first glance they may seem like a rowdy cluster of non sequiturs jostling— if not at significant odds— with each other.  Dr. Shumaker offers his reflections on a lifetime of pursuing their intersection towards a life well lived— and begs to differ! Each can play an essential part in our development within God’s plan to create a people whom He can safely entrust with new heavens and a new earth. \nLast Lecture Series: Dr. Stephen Shumaker\nMonday\, January 26\, 2026\n12:15 pm – 1:15 pm MT\nFran & Larry Donnithorne Great Hall; Anschutz Student Center\nColorado Christian University\n8787 W. SUMMARY:Things Considered: How Your Thoughts and Actions Determine Your Destiny
DESCRIPTION:Join the Centennial Institute for our upcoming Last Lecture event with Dr. Debora Scheffel. \nIn Prince Caspian\, Aslan tells Lucy that “things never happen the same way twice.” The same can be said in each Christian’s walk with Christ. We may share the same foundation\, but our choices and actions ultimately define our destiny. \nDr. Scheffel’s career has encompassed a variety of positions within both academia and the political sphere. Each of these paths was a result of decisions and actions she took throughout her life in pursuit of the ultimate end: to share the light of Christ in every aspect of her life. Reflecting on her current season in life and lessons she has learned\, Dr. Scheffel will share her insights into what informed the decisions that ultimately determined her path\, and how to put Christ first in everything. \nLast Lecture Series: Dr. Debora Scheffel\nMonday\, November 17\, 2025\n12:15 pm – 1:15 pm MT\nFran & Larry Donnithorne Great Hall; Anschutz Student Center\nColorado Christian University\n8787 W. SUMMARY:The War for Middle-Earth
DESCRIPTION:Join Centennial Institute for an event with notable scholar and author Dr. Joseph Loconte\, as he discusses his new book The War for Middle-Earth. \n \nAmid the catastrophe of the Second World War\, two Oxford scholars and friends wrote epic fantasies—not as an escape from the conflict but as a powerful weapon to defend the dignity and worth of every human soul. The War for Middle-Earth: J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis Confront the Gathering Storm\, 1933–1945\, by New York Times bestselling author Joseph Loconte\, reveals how Tolkien and Lewis used their imagination to battle the political ideologies that threatened to destroy Western civilization. \nLoconte traces how these combat veterans of the First World War responded to the rise of fascism\, Nazism\, communism\, and totalitarianism—not with cynicism and despair\, but with moral clarity and moral courage. In both their scholarship and their works of fiction\, they offered a bracing vision of the human story: a recovery of ancient truths and virtues to light a path through the gathering darkness of their age. \nThe War for Middle-Earth\nThursday\, November 13\, 2025\n7:00 pm – 8:30 pm MT\nFran & Larry Donnithorne Great Hall\nAnschutz Student Center\nColorado Christian University\n8787 W. Alameda Ave.\nLakewood\, CO 80226 \nAbout Joseph Loconte \n \nJoseph Loconte\, PhD\, is an author\, historian\, and filmmaker. He serves as director of the Rivendell Center in New York City. He is a Presidential Scholar at New College of Florida and the C.S. Lewis Scholar for Public Life at Grove City College. He is the author of the New York Times bestseller A Hobbit\, a Wardrobe\, and a Great War: How J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis Rediscovered Faith\, Friendship\, and Heroism in the Cataclysm of 1914-1918 and his new release The War for Middle-Earth: J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis Confront the Gathering Storm\, 1933–1945. \nHis commentary appears in outlets such as The New York Times\, The Wall Street Journal\, National Affairs\, The New Criterion\, National Geographic\, Law and Liberty\, The National Interest\, and National Review. For ten years\, Loconte served as a commentator for National Public Radio’s All Things Considered. \nLoconte is a native of Brooklyn\, NY\, a forlorn fan of the NY Mets\, and a frequent traveler to sunny Italy. SUMMARY:Issue Monday: The Assault on Religious Liberty\, Free Speech\, and Parental Rights in Colorado
DESCRIPTION:Join the Centennial Institute for a critical Issue Monday event exploring the growing threats to core constitutional freedoms in Colorado. \nAs Colorado faces a third visit to the U.S. Supreme Court in seven years for violating conscience rights in Chiles v. Salazar\, the ongoing assaults on individual liberty are increasingly impacting families and religious communities across the state. Our expert panel will examine recent and troubling developments\, including the Elizabeth School District controversy over the removal of inappropriate books\, state pressure on Camp IdRaHaJe to compromise its religious mission\, and the increasing trend of school administrators facilitating gender transitions without parental consent. This timely conversation will highlight the importance of protecting religious liberty\, free speech\, and parental rights in the face of mounting government overreach. \nThis event will not be available for livestreaming; we apologize for any inconvenience. \nIssue Monday: The Assault on Religious Liberty\, Free Speech\, and Parental Rights in Colorado\nMonday\, October 13\, 2025\n7:00 pm – 8:30 pm MT\nFran & Larry Donnithorne Great Hall\nAnschutz Student Center\nColorado Christian University\n8787 W. SUMMARY:The 1916 Project Screening & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join the Centennial Institute and CCU for Life for a screening of Seth Gruber’s new documentary\, The 1916 Project\, followed by a discussion about the film’s main themes with AJ Hurley\, national organizer of outreach for The White Rose Resistance. \nThe 1916 Project is a powerful documentary that uncovers the disturbing legacy of Margaret Sanger\, the founder of Planned Parenthood\, and her deep ties to the eugenics movement (a harmful pseudoscientific belief aimed at “improving” humanity by controlling who could reproduce. This ideology targeted marginalized groups—especially people of color\, the poor\, and those with disabilities—justifying horrific policies like forced sterilizations and treating human lives as disposable). Through compelling historical research and expert analysis\, the film reveals how Sanger’s racist and elitist ideologies have shaped the modern cultural landscape. From the promotion of abortion to the breakdown of family structures and the rise of gender confusion\, The 1916 Project exposes the enduring impact of her influence\, particularly on communities of color. The film serves as a call to action for those seeking to understand the origins of America’s moral decline and the forces at play in today’s culture war. \nTHIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT. \nThe 1916 Project Screening & Discussion\nWednesday\, April 9\, 2025\n6:00 pm – 8:30 pm MT\nFran & Larry Donnithorne Great Hall; Anschutz Student Center\nColorado Christian University\n8787 W. Alameda Ave.\nLakewood\, CO 80226 \nAbout AJ Hurley \n \nAJ Hurley is a fiery torchbearer of the pro-life movement. As a national speaker\, activist\, and leader in the fight against the culture of death\, AJ is an unrelenting force bringing change to America. AJ made national news when he and a group of activists exposed a box of unborn babies in Washington\, DC\, on March 25\, 2023\, outside of an abortion clinic. He co-founded the #JusticeForTheFive campaign to highlight late-term abortion and spent years uncovering a fetal organ trafficking ring funded by taxpayer money. Before becoming a full-time activist\, AJ spent eight years as a Neonatal Respiratory Care Practitioner\, dedicating himself to saving the lives of the most vulnerable patients. This experience fueled his passion to protect unborn children. AJ has worked as the National Director of Activism at Live Action and Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust. He now serves as the national organizer of outreach for The White Rose Resistance\, where he aims to train and mobilize Christians nationwide to combat child killing.

SUMMARY:The Everyday Constitution: Constitutional Issues and the Trial Courts

SUMMARY:Constitution Day Lecture: How the Structure of the Constitution Preserves Liberty
DESCRIPTION:Join the Centennial Institute for our second-annual Constitution Day Lecture. \nThe Founding Fathers created the first modern form of government to acknowledge that rights came from God\, not government. To preserve these liberties from the encroachment of political power\, the United States Constitution was uniquely designed to protect individual liberty by dividing power among multiple branches\, granting limited and enumerated powers to the federal government\, ensuring checks and balances\, and securing fundamental rights. \nAt a time when individual liberty seems to be under assault\, it is essential that we return to our founding principles. \nConstitution Day Lecture\nMonday\, September 18\, 2023\n6:30 pm – 8:00 pm MT\nGreat Hall\, Anschutz Student Center\nColorado Christian University\n8787 W. Alameda Ave\nLakewood\, CO 80226 \nAbout Sean Nation \nSean Nation is Deputy General Counsel for the Mountain States Legal Foundation\, where he focuses on defending individual liberty. A native of Georgia\, he attended Emory University for his undergraduate and New York University School of Law. While at NYU\, he helped to found the Journal of Law and Liberty\, the first student-edited law journal dedicated to the critical exploration of classical liberal ideas. He has dedicated his career to helping individuals recover damages in class and collective actions. He is admitted to practice in the states of New York and Georgia and various federal courts. \nOnline Form – Constitution Day 2023 \nPowered by Formstack

SUMMARY:Preserving Free Speech: An Evening with Lorie Smith and 303 Creative
DESCRIPTION:Join the Centennial Institute at Colorado Christian University and Alliance Defending Freedom for a conversation with Lorie Smith about recent oral arguments in the Supreme Court case 303 Creative v. Elenis. \nShould the government be able to tell Americans what they can and cannot say? Or should artists be forced to express messages they don’t believe? What happens when public accommodation laws and free speech collide? \nGraphic artist and website designer Lorie Smith has asked the Court to decide whether the state of Colorado can force her to create custom websites that violate her beliefs about marriage. At the heart of the case is whether Colorado can use its public accommodations law—the same law that the state used to target Christian cake artist Jack Philips of Masterpiece Cakeshop—to compel speech and excise beliefs the government dislikes from the public square.  Like Jack\, Lorie serves everyone\, including those who identify as LGBT.  She simply wants the freedom to create custom art and promote messages consistent with her beliefs. A win for Lorie in this case is a win for all Americans—because no one should be forced by the government to say something with which they disagree. \nPreserving Free Speech: An Evening with Lorie Smith and 303 Creative\nTuesday\, February 7\, 2023\n7:00 pm – 8:30 pm MT\nAnschutz Great Room\nColorado Christian University\n8787 W. SUMMARY:Davenant Institute: Religious Liberty and the Common Good
DESCRIPTION:RELIGIOUS LIBERTY AND THE COMMON GOOD\nA Debate Between Jonathan Leeman and Brad Littlejohn\nChristianity in America faces dire threats from two directions. On the one hand\, unfriendly government bureaucrats and downright hostile woke activists are tightening the screws on Christians’ freedom of worship\, expression\, and conscience. At the same time\, churches themselves are not immune to the profound crisis of authority that has engulfed our public life\, and the reflexive “me and my rights” individualism that has undermined the very concept of institutional norms and the common good. \nHow can we stand up for authentic religious liberty in an age of license and moral chaos? And on what basis should we advocate in the public square for policies that protect the church? Different Protestant traditions have offered sharply different understandings of the relationship between individual conscience\, the institutional church\, and the responsibility of civil government. \nJoin us at Colorado Christian University after this year’s annual meeting of the Evangelical Theological Society for a debate night between representatives of Baptist and magisterial Protestant political theology as we explore these critical questions. \nThursday\, November 17\, 2022\n6:30 pm – 10:00 pm MT\nAnschutz Great Room\nColorado Christian University\n8787 W. SUMMARY:Issue Forum: Conservatism: A Rediscovery
DESCRIPTION:Join the Centennial Institute at Colorado Christian University for an evening with the premiere political theorist of the modern Western world: Dr. Yoram Hazony. \nThe idea that American conservatism is identical to “classical” liberalism—widely held since the 1960s—is seriously mistaken. Dr. Hazony argues that the best hope for Western democracy is a return to the empiricist\, religious\, and nationalist traditions of America and Britain—the conservative traditions that brought greatness to the English-speaking nations and became the model for national freedom for the entire world. \nHazony will examine how Anglo-American conservatism became a distinctive alternative to divine-right monarchy\, Puritan theocracy\, and liberal revolution. After tracing the tradition from the Wars of the Roses to Burke and across the Atlantic to the American Federalists and Lincoln\, he will describe the rise and fall of Enlightenment liberalism after World War II and the present-day debates between neoconservatives and national conservatives over how to respond to liberalism and the woke left and bring a revival of authentic Anglo-American conservatism in the twenty-first century. \nIssue Forum: Conservatism: A Rediscovery\nWednesday\, October 19\, 2022\n7:00 pm – 8:30 pm MT\nAnschutz Great Room\nColorado Christian University\n8787 W. Alameda Ave.\nLakewood\, CO 80226 \nAbout Dr. Yoram Hazony: \nDr. Yoram Hazony is the President of the Herzl Institute in Jerusalem\, and currently serves as Chairman of the Edmund Burke Foundation\, a public affairs institute based in Washington that has hosted the National Conservatism Conference since 2019. \nHis book The Virtue of Nationalism was published by Basic Books in September 2018. It has been selected as Conservative Book of the Year for 2019\, and was an amazon #1 best-seller in both International Diplomacy and Nationalism. \nHis most recent book Conservatism: A Rediscovery was published by Regnery in May 2022. \nHis previous books include The Philosophy of Hebrew Scripture (Cambridge University Press\, 2012)\, which won the second place PROSE award for the best book in the category of Theology and Religion by the Association of American Publishers; The Jewish State: The Struggle for Israel’s Soul (Basic Books\, 2000); and God and Politics in Esther (Cambridge University Press\, 2016). \nHis work has appeared in The Wall St. Journal\, The New York Times\, Fox News\, CNN\, NPR\, Time Magazine\, The New Republic\, National Review\, Commentary\, First Things\, and American Affairs\, among others. In April 2016\, he appeared with Morgan Freeman in his hit National Geographic miniseries “The Story of God.” You can watch them talk about God here. \nEarlier he founded and headed the Shalem Center\, a Jerusalem research institute that conducted nearly two decades of pioneering work in the fields of philosophy\, political theory\, Bible\, Talmud\, Jewish and Zionist history\, Middle East Studies and archaeology beginning in 1994. The Center’s publishing arm\, Shalem Press\, became Israel’s leading publisher of Western philosophy translated into Hebrew and published Azure magazine. In 2013\, Shalem was accredited to grant Israel’s first Liberal Arts B.A.\, and formally became Shalem College. He served as President of Shalem from 1994-2002\, and as Provost from 2005-2012. A journalistic write-up about his Shalem work is here. \nAfter that\, he served as a member of the Israel Council for Higher Education’s commission on General Studies and Liberal Arts programs in Israel’s universities and colleges\, and was Director of the John Templeton Foundation‘s project in Jewish Philosophical Theology during the years 2010-2018. \nHe was born in Rehovot\, Israel\, in 1964. He graduated from Princeton University with a B.A. in East Asian Studies in 1986\, and completed his Ph.D. at Rutgers University in Political Theory in 1993. As an undergraduate\, he founded and was the first editor of Princeton’s conservative student journal\, The Princeton Tory. The first issue appeared in October 1984\, when Ronald Reagan was President and Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister of Britain. \nHe lives in Jerusalem with his wife Yael Hazony. They have nine children. \nOnline Form – IF: Dr. Yoram Hazony 10.19.22 \nPowered by Formstack

SUMMARY:Debate: Are Reparations Key to Achieving Racial Reconciliation?
DESCRIPTION:Join the Centennial Institute and the Intercollegiate Studies Institute as we examine the question of reparation policies in relation to racial reconciliation in the U.S. \nReparations are an issue on the horizon\, with some cities across the country considering reparations to address historical injustices such as slavery. While some believe reparations would be an act of social justice for the descendants of those who suffered as slaves\, others believe that reparations don’t make sense for a variety of reasons\, including that they would imply that Americans today with no affiliation themselves with slavery are guilty of the sins of past generations. \nThe debate will be moderated by Mikayle Scheffel\, Instructor of Communication and Head Coach of the Speech and Debate Team at Colorado Christian University. \nDebate: Are Reparations Key to Achieving Racial Reconciliation?\nMonday\, March 7\, 2022\n7:30pm – 9:00pm MT\nAnschutz Great Room\nColorado Christian University\n8787 W. SUMMARY:Distinguished Lecture Series: After Afghanistan: How Just War Theory Helps Make Sense of a Tragedy
DESCRIPTION:Join the Centennial Institute for our February Distinguished Lecture Series event featuring Dr. Eric Patterson\, Executive Vice President of the Religious Freedom Institute. \nThe Christian tradition of Just Theory applies Biblical principles to how a nation decides to go to war and how it should fight wars. But\, as Dr. Patterson points out\, the tradition can also inform what happens after a war ends – how one might restore order\, liberty\, and justice after the fighting stops. This lecture will look at the tragic case of post-war Afghanistan\, and what the U.S. could and should do differently next time. \nDistinguished Lecture Series: After Afghanistan: How Just War Theory Helps Make Sense of a Tragedy\nDr. Eric Patterson\nMonday\, February 7\, 2022\n7:30pm – 9:00pm MT\nAnschutz Great Room\nColorado Christian University\n8787 W.
