Ph.D. is executive vice president of the Religious Freedom Institute in Washington\, DC and Scholar-at-Large and the former dean of the Robertson School of Government at Regent University.   His research and teaching focus on religion\, ethics\, and international affairs. Patterson previously taught at Georgetown University and has extensive government experience\, including service as a White House Fellow and special assistant to the director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management\, two stints in the State Department’s Bureau of Political and Military Affairs\, and over twenty years of service as an officer and commander in the Air National Guard.  Patterson has spoken for many government audiences such as the French Department of Defense\, U.S. Military Academy (West Point)\, the U.S. Naval Academy (Annapolis)\, the Armed Forces Chaplains Center\, National Defense University\, the Pentagon\, the Naval Postgraduate School\, the Foreign Service Institute\, and other government venues.  In addition to dozens of peer-reviewed academic articles\, he is the author or editor of eighteen books\, including Just War and Christian Traditions (with J. DESCRIPTION:Join the Centennial Institute at Colorado Christian University for a rally in support of the Right to Life prevailing in America’s highest court. \nCould 2022 be the year Roe v. Wade is reversed? \nIn 1973\, the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling in Roe v. Wade shook the foundation of the United States. As abortion was effectively protected throughout the U.S.\, many began the long fight to reclaim the Right to Life\, as guaranteed in America’s founding. Now\, the Supreme Court has chosen yet again to hear an abortion case: Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. \nIn 2018\, the Jackson Women’s Health Organization challenged Mississippi’s Gestational Age Act\, prohibiting abortions after the fifteenth week of pregnancy except in the cases of a medical emergency. The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments for Dobbs on December 1\, 2021. DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Owen Strachan\, author of Christianity and Wokeness: How the Social Justice Movement is Hijacking the Gospel – and the Way to Stop It\, for our November Distinguished Lecture Series. \nThe “wokeness” that emerged from the social unrest of 2020 has swept through schools\, businesses\, and even sports. Driven by the radical ideologies of Critical Race Theory and intersectionality\, it has destabilized public and private life—including the Church. \nMany evangelicals have joined the crusade. Gripped by a desire for justice and rightly grieved by past evils like slavery\, many pastors are preaching the woke gospel—identifying “whiteness” (an imaginary concept) with “white supremacy\,” calling bewildered Christians to repent of their supposed guilt for the sins of past generations. \nDr. Owen Strachan will discuss how this is not true justice\, nor is it true Christianity. While wokeness employs biblical vocabulary and concepts\, it is an alternative religion\, far from Christianity in both its methods and its fruit. SUMMARY:In Search of Ancient Roots
DESCRIPTION:Protestant evangelicalism is in crisis. Today it is increasingly difficult for Protestants to identify what counts as distinctively Protestant\, much less what counts as evangelical. As evangelicals increasingly lose contact with the churches and traditions descending from the Reformation\, and as relations with Roman Catholicism continue to thaw\, it becomes harder to explain why one should remain committed to the Reformation in the face of perceived deficits and theological challenges with the Protestant tradition. A common complaint about Protestant evangelicalism is its apparent disconnect from ancient Christianity. The antiquity and catholicity of Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy seem to outshine the relative novelty of the Reformation. Some evangelical churches appear to be uninterested in the ancient historical roots of their faith as well as being liturgically and doctrinally unstable. Many within evangelicalism seem to have accepted at face value the suggestion that the evangelical faith is no more than a threadbare descendant of ancient Christianity. The result is that a number of younger Protestants in recent years have abandoned evangelicalism\, turning instead to practices and traditions that appear more rooted in the early church. In Search of Ancient Roots examines this phenomenon and places it within a wider historical context. Ken Stewart argues that the evangelical tradition in fact has a much healthier track record of interacting with Christian antiquity than it is usually given credit for. SUMMARY:In Search of Ancient Roots
DESCRIPTION:Protestant evangelicalism is in crisis. Today it is increasingly difficult for Protestants to identify what counts as distinctively Protestant\, much less what counts as evangelical. As evangelicals increasingly lose contact with the churches and traditions descending from the Reformation\, and as relations with Roman Catholicism continue to thaw\, it becomes harder to explain why one should remain committed to the Reformation in the face of perceived deficits and theological challenges with the Protestant tradition. A common complaint about Protestant evangelicalism is its apparent disconnect from ancient Christianity. The antiquity and catholicity of Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy seem to outshine the relative novelty of the Reformation. Some evangelical churches appear to be uninterested in the ancient historical roots of their faith as well as being liturgically and doctrinally unstable. Many within evangelicalism seem to have accepted at face value the suggestion that the evangelical faith is no more than a threadbare descendant of ancient Christianity. The result is that a number of younger Protestants in recent years have abandoned evangelicalism\, turning instead to practices and traditions that appear more rooted in the early church. In Search of Ancient Roots examines this phenomenon and places it within a wider historical context. Ken Stewart argues that the evangelical tradition in fact has a much healthier track record of interacting with Christian antiquity than it is usually given credit for. He has a growing interest in early Christianity and the transmission of doctrine from the early church forward to our time. He also teaches early modern European history and the two-semester Christian Doctrine sequence required for sophomores. In Crucible of Faith\, Philip Jenkins argues that much of the Judeo-Christian tradition we know today was born between 250-50 BCE\, during a turbulent “Crucible Era.” It was during these years that Judaism grappled with Hellenizing forces and produced new religious ideas that reflected and responded to their changing world. By the time of the fall of the Temple in 70 CE\, concepts that might once have seemed bizarre became normalized-and thus passed on to Christianity and later Islam.
