SUMMARY:Challenges with Government-Run Education
DESCRIPTION:Government-run education in Colorado is facing serious challenges. A record number of Colorado families are choosing homeschool or charter schools. According to U.S. News and World Report\, four out of the top five performing high schools in Colorado are charter schools. Senator Ben Sasse criticized government-run education as an effort to “homogenize” our kids. Faith leader James Dobson said\, “Today\, public schools don’t offer much in the way of values education\, and if they do\, it’s often wrong.” Some even believe what goes on in public schools can be harmful to a student’s development and learning. \nStill\, a vast majority of Coloradans choose government-run education for their children. How does Colorado improve education? What are the hurdles and challenges facing policymakers\, educators\, and parents? Should Colorado take steps to embrace vouchers and provide religious school choice for parents? How do we achieve the best education for Coloradans? \nJoin the Centennial Institute at Colorado Christian University for this important conversation on the challenges facing government-run education. \nJanuary 14\, 2019\n7:00 PM – 8:30 PM\nColorado Christian University\nLeprino Hall 170\n8787 W. Alameda Ave.\nLakewood\, CO 80226 \nSpeakers:\nDr. Deb Scheffel is the Dean of Dean of the School of Education at Colorado Christian University. She also represents District 4 on the Colorado State Board of Education. \nMike Rosen is a radio personality\, political commentator\, and author. He was the host of The Mike Rosen Show on talk radio station 850 KOA in Denver\, Colorado. \nDerec Shuler is the Executive Director of Ascent Classical Academies\, a classical charter school program with schools in Jefferson and Douglas Counties. \nLaura Boggs is a former member of the Jefferson County Board of Education. \nOnline Form – CI – DL – Education – Jan 14 \nPowered by Formstack

SUMMARY:Early Childhood Care and Education Policy Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Should America expand paid maternity leave? How do you balance the needs of parents\, children\, and small business owners? Should the state of Colorado provide free preschool and kindergarten? Are there free-market-based policies that can serve parents\, children\, and business owners? What are other options to support early childhood education? What’s working for parents and children and what’s broken now? \nEvery day\, millions of working parents struggle with keeping careers on track while raising children\, and finding balance between child rearing and building a career is exceptionally hard. The first 1\,000 days of a child’s life\, in particular\, set the foundation upon which all future development and learning takes place. Employers and our wider society benefit when children get the right start and thrive\, and society and employers win when working parents are productive. Although both beneficiaries can do far more to ensure working parents are equipped to nurture their children and advance their careers\, state and federal policies have not been responsive or supportive of this fundamental social issue. If work is truly the path toward economic security and upward mobility\, public and workplace policies that allow parents to succeed in the workforce\, and do right by their children\, are vital to the future success of our country. \nThe focus of the Early Childhood Care & Education Policy Distinguished Lecture will be to illuminate market-based policies that strike a healthy balance between family wellbeing and a prosperous economy. The featured speakers will include national policy experts\, Katharine Stevens\, who leads the early-childhood program at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI)\, and Nadine Maenza\, the founding Executive Director of Patriot Voices\, where she leads the organization’s special emphasis on public policies that help working families. The panelists will also include State Senator-Elect Brittany Pettersen and State Representative Alec Garnett\, who will provide perspective on early childhood education policies in our state. Gloria Higgins\, the President of Executives Partnering to Invest in Children (EPIC) will serve as the panel moderator\, and will shed light on the employer’s perspective. \nMonday\, December 10\, 2018\n7:00pm – 8:30pm\nColorado Christian University\nLeprino Hall 170\n8787 W. SUMMARY:When Harry Became Sally: Responding to the Transgender Moment
DESCRIPTION:The transgender movement has hit breakneck speed. In the space of a year\, it’s gone from something that most Americans had never heard of to a cause claiming the mantle of civil rights. \nBut can a boy truly be “trapped” in a girl’s body? Can modern medicine really “reassign” sex? Is sex something “assigned” in the first place? What’s the loving response to a friend or child experiencing a gender-identity conflict? What should our law say on these issues? \nDr. Ryan T. Anderson will provide thoughtful answers to these questions and more as he presents his latest book\, When Harry Became Sally: Responding to the Transgender Moment. Drawing on the best insights from biology\, psychology\, and philosophy\, Ryan T. Anderson offers a balanced approach to the policy issues\, a nuanced vision of human embodiment\, and a sober and honest survey of the human costs of getting human nature wrong. \nHe reveals a grim contrast between the media’s sunny depiction and the often sad realities of gender-identity struggles. He introduces listeners to people who tried to “transition” but found themselves no better off. Especially troubling is the suffering felt by adults who were encouraged to transition as children but later came to regret it. \nAnd there is a reason that many do regret it. As Anderson shows\, the most helpful therapies focus not on achieving the impossible—changing bodies to conform to thoughts and feelings—but on helping people accept and even embrace the truth about their bodies and reality. This discussion will be of particular interest to parents who fear how an ideological school counselor might try to steer their child. The best evidence shows that the vast majority of children naturally grow out of any gender-conflicted phase. But no one knows how new school policies might affect children indoctrinated to believe that they really are trapped in the “wrong” body. \nThroughout his new book\, Anderson highlights the various contradictions at the heart of this moment: How it embraces the gnostic idea that the real self is something other than the body\, while also embracing the idea that nothing but the physical exists. How it relies on rigid sex stereotypes—in which dolls are for girls and trucks are for boys—while also insisting that gender is purely a social construct\, and that there are no meaningful differences between women and men. How it assumes that feelings of identity deserve absolute respect\, while the facts of our embodiment do not. How it preaches that people should be free to do as they please and define their own truth—while enforcing a ruthless campaign to coerce anyone who dares to dissent. \nEveryone has something at stake in today’s debates about gender identity. Analyzing education and employment policies\, Obama-era bathroom and locker-room mandates\, politically correct speech codes and religious-freedom violations\, Anderson shows how the law is being used to coerce and penalize those who believe the truth about human nature. And he shows how Americans can begin to push back with principle and prudence\, compassion and grace. \nMonday\, April 9\, 2018\n7:00 pm – 8:30 pm\nColorado Christian University\nLeprino Hall 170\n8787 W. SUMMARY:The End of Religious Freedom? Challenges from the Right\, the Left\, and Around the Globe
DESCRIPTION:Religious liberty is in peril around the globe. The U.S. in particular and the West in general must continue to press the case for this freedom. Rather than make us complacent about our own good fortune\, the frightening international scene must make us vigilant to defend what we have. Unfortunately\, the principle of religious freedom–and in some ways the entire notion of human rights–is under unprecedented assault even in the West. Forces on the right challenge the (classical) liberal project altogether\, and forces on the left water it down to incoherence. Therefore\, we must discover\, or rediscover\, a firm foundation for religious freedom so that we can rescue it at home and promote it in the world. In part\, this entails developing Christian ideas and a Christian culture that stand between secularism and theocracy. \nPlease join us to hear from Dr. Daniel Mark\, Chairman of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom for an update on the state of religious freedom in America and around the world\, as well as ideas on how we can protect this important human right.\n\nMonday\, January 29\, 2018\n7:00pm – 8:30pm\nColorado Christian University\nLeprino Hall 170\n8787 W. SUMMARY:Race Relations in America
DESCRIPTION:According to Gallup\, race relations are far lower today than they were in the early 2000s. In fact\, race relations hit an all-time low in 2015. How do we understand what is happening to race relations in America? How do we navigate these complexities and remain united as Americans? How does the public square engage with the messages from groups like Black Lives Matter and the Alt-Right? \nDr. Carol Swain\, author of the books: The New White Nationalism in America\, Race Versus Class\, and Black Faces\, Black Interests\, will help explore these important issues. \nA black conservative\, Dr. Swain has been unfairly smeared by the liberal Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) as an “apologist for white supremacists.” \nFrom high school dropout and teenage mother to highly accomplished university professor and public intellectual\, Dr. Carol M. Swain is passionate about empowering others to confidently raise their voices in the public square. Dr. Swain’s education and experiences make her a credible and powerful force for change in today’s social and political climate where conservatives are intimidated to champion an often-unpopular message. \nMonday\, December 4\, 2017\n7:00pm – 8:30pm\nColorado Christian University\nLeprino Hall 170\n180 S.
