Government-run education in Colorado is facing serious challenges. A record number of Colorado families are choosing homeschool or charter schools. According to U.S. News and World Report, four out of the top five performing high schools in Colorado are charter schools. Senator Ben Sasse criticized government-run education as an effort to “homogenize” our kids. Faith leader James Dobson said, “Today, public schools don’t offer much in the way of values education, and if they do, it’s often wrong.” Some even believe what goes on in public schools can be harmful to a student’s development and learning.
Still, a vast majority of Coloradans choose government-run education for their children. How does Colorado improve education? What are the hurdles and challenges facing policymakers, educators, and parents? Should Colorado take steps to embrace vouchers and provide religious school choice for parents? How do we achieve the best education for Coloradans?
