President’s Lecture Series: The Life of Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower

In observance of President’s Day, Dr. Mark Grotelueschen will speak on the life of General Dwight Eisenhower, the 34th president of the United States. General Eisenhower also served as the President of Columbia College, Chief of Staff of the Army, and Supreme Allied Commander Europe. He was responsible for planning the successful invasion of Normandy.

As a military historian, Dr. Groteleuschen is imminently qualified to speak about President Eisenhower’s spiritual life and the overall importance of his service to our country.

About Dr. Mark Grotelueschen:

Mark E. Grotelueschen, PhD, teaches strategic studies and serves as the Assistant Head of Academics as well as the Chief of Majors Academics in the Department of Military and Strategic Studies at the U.S. Air Force Academy near Colorado Springs, Colorado. He previously served as Professor of History while holding a Senior Military Faculty position in the Department of History.

During more than a decade of teaching at the Air Force Academy he has taught a wide range of courses covering strategy, military thought, history, statesmanship, and area studies. He has previously served as the chief of the Military History division, the chair of the Academy’s African Area Studies Group, and as the Academy’s Faculty Representative for the national Truman Scholarship program. He is the recipient of the Outstanding Academy Educator Award, the McDermott Award for Research Excellence in the Humanities, and the Orrison Award for cadet advising and mentoring.

A 27 year Air Force veteran and former aircraft maintenance officer, he worked directly with many different types of aircraft (A-10, C-12, C-17, C-130, E-3, F-16, KC-10, KC-135, RQ-4, and U-2), and commanded the 380th Expeditionary Maintenance Operations Squadron at Al Dhafra Air Base, UAE, in 2004-2005. Dr Grotelueschen also served as the Deputy Chief of Engagement Integration in the Strategy, Plans, and Programs Directorate (A5) at US Air Forces Africa, Ramstein AB, Germany. He deployed as a United Nations peacekeeper in the United Nations Mission in Liberia, where he worked in the mission’s Joint Logistics Operations Centre and helped plan and execute the successful national elections there in 2011.

He graduated with Academic Distinction from the USAF Academy, earned an MA in Military and Diplomatic History from the University of Calgary, and holds a PhD in History from Texas A&M University. He is the author or editor of many articles and books, including The AEF Way of War: The American Army and Combat in World War I (Cambridge, 2007), which has been selected repeatedly by multiple US Army Chiefs of Staff for their Professional Reading Lists. Most recently he authored Into the Fight: April-June 1918 for the US Army Center of Military History’s Campaigns of World War I series.
