Centennial Institute Applauds U.S. Supreme Court Ruling in Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic

June 26, 2025

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – Centennial Institute at Colorado Christian University released the following statement in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic:

The Supreme Court rightly affirmed that the Medicaid Act does not grant individual recipients the right to choose any provider without restriction. In Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, the Court addressed two key questions: whether Medicaid guarantees a right to provider choice, and whether a Medicaid recipient can sue to reinstate a provider disqualified by the state. In both cases, the Court declined to expand the statute beyond its intended scope.

This ruling upholds South Carolina’s authority to determine eligibility for participation in its Medicaid program, consistent with its legislative priorities. The state’s decision to exclude Planned Parenthood is rooted in a principled refusal to allow taxpayer dollars to indirectly subsidize abortion—an act the state seeks to discourage and does not fund directly. While Planned Parenthood claims these funds are used for non-abortion services, money is fungible, and states have a legitimate interest in ensuring their healthcare dollars do not support organizations whose core mission conflicts with the values of their citizens.
